Want your home to smell like fall without toxic air fresheners? Here is an all-natural, inexpensive and simple way to fill your home with the aroma of fall and Thanksgiving!

3-4 apple slices
1-2 lemon slices
1-2 orange slices (optional, but try and use one citrus)
1-2 [cinnamon sticks]
1-2 teaspoons [whole cloves]
1 teaspoon [whole allspice] (optional)
1/2- 1 teaspoon [pumpkin pie spice]
1 vanilla bean (optional (can sub. 1 tsp [vanilla bean paste] or vanilla extract if desired))
1-2 sprigs fresh rosemary
1-2 sprigs (fresh thyme)
1-2 [bay leaves] (fresh or dried)
water to fill the pot

Steps:

  • For Simmering Spices/Potpourri
  • Simply slice, snip, fill and toss in your desired ingredients into a small pot. Fill pot with water (or expired apple juice or orange juice) and bring to a simmer on the stovetop (or in a mini-crockpot). Replenish water as it evaporates. Do not leave unattended.

This is the recipe my MIL gave me years ago for Simmering Potpourri. Use it for a delightful way to freshen the air. Usually used around the holidays.

Number Of Ingredients 14

1/2 cup orrisroot chips
15 drops cinnamon oil
10 drops clove oil
5 drops orange oil
1 cup broken cinnamon stick
1 cup whole allspice
1 cup dried orange peel
1 cup bay leaf
1 cup coriander
1 cup mint
1/2 cup whole cloves
1/2 cup star anise
1/2 cup pine needles
1/2 cup rosemary

Steps:

  • Combine first 4 ingredients in small bowl.
  • Combine next 10 ingredients in large bowl.
  • Stir two mixtures together.
  • To scent air, put 1/3 of the potpourri mixture in 4 cups of water, boil, reduce heat and simmer.
  • Add water as needed.

This potpourri uses things found in your spice cupboard and fruit drawer. I put approximate amounts of everything... please use your own judgement for exact measurements. I never measure anything.. I just use up what I have. You can use any combination.. be creative!

2 apples (sliced to just under 1/4-inch)
2 small oranges (sliced to just under 1/4-inch)
3 limes (sliced to just under 1/4-inch)
2 lemons (sliced to just under 1/4-inch)
2 cups cranberries
handful bay leaf
4 cinnamon sticks, broken in half
2 tablespoons whole cloves
2 tablespoons whole allspice
2 tablespoons vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Dry apple, orange, lime, and lemon slices.
  • I put them on a cookie cooling rack, then on a baking sheet and place in oven. Bake at 170 F for about 5-7 hours, until apples are still pliable but not mushy, and there is no liquid left in citrus fruit.
  • Dry cranberries by covering a baking sheet with parchment paper and putting cranberries in single layer.
  • Dry @ 170°F These take about 8 hours.
  • As fruit is done, take out and place in a large bowl.
  • Add all the spices.
  • Toss with vanilla extract and allow to dry overnight.
  • Place in container or bags to give away.

10 whole cloves
6 whole allspice
6 cardamom pods
5 whole star anise
3 slices fresh gingerroot
3 pieces orange, lemon or lime peel
2 cinnamon sticks (3 inches)

Steps:

  • Place cloves, allspice, cardamom, star anise, ginger, orange peel and cinnamon sticks on a double thickness of cheesecloth. Bring up corners of cloth; tie with a string to form a bag. Set aside. Fill Dutch oven or large stockpot two-thirds way full with water. Add spice bag. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, replenishing water as necessary.
