This is delicious! It's the only way my family will eat cabbage other than in coleslaw. Hehe. I like to serve it with sliced avocado.

2 tablespoons margarine
1 onion, chopped
2 slices green bell pepper
1 medium head cabbage, cored and coarsely chopped
¼ cup water
1 clove garlic, crushed
2 sprigs fresh thyme
1 scotch bonnet chile pepper
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Melt margarine in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir onion and bell pepper slices until slightly softened, 3 to 5 minutes. Add cabbage, water, garlic, and thyme; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium; cover and cook until cabbage is tender, 8 to 10 minutes.
  • Place scotch bonnet chile in the skillet and stir. Add salt and pepper. Simmer 2 or 3 minutes more.

My Southern Style Steamed Cabbage recipe is a family favorite in our home. Some call this a fried cabbage recipe. You can serve the cabbage with ham or sausage.

1 large head of cabbage (rinsed)
1 1/2 tbsp of canola oil
1 1/2 cups of water
2-5 small pieces of cooked ham (1-2 bacon strips or Ready to Serve Real Bacon Bits)
salt & pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Bring a large pot to medium heat.
  • Add the canola oil, ham, or bacon and toss together to flavor the oil and get the juices going in the meat.
  • Cut your cabbage in half and discard any damaged outer leaves.
  • Cut each half of the cabbage into 2-inch square chunks.
  • Add the cabbage to the oil and ham mixture.
  • Toss and stir the cabbage to ensure the oil is on every piece of cabbage.
  • Add water, cover, and turn the heat down to low.
  • Stir cabbage every 5 minutes until tender. About 15 minutes

4 slices bacon, cut in 1 inch pieces
2 lbs green cabbage, coarsely sliced
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water

Steps:

  • In a 5-quart dutch oven or 12-inch skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until browned.
  • Add cabbage, onion, salt; stir to coat cabbage evenly with bacon fat.
  • Add water and reduce heat to medium-low; cover and cook 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender and lightly browned.

4 pound cabbage (3-4 pound cabbage, shredded)
1 cup onion (chopped )
1 cup chicken broth (or use vegetable broth to make this dish vegetarian)
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
½ cup butter (unsalted or vegan butter)
½ teaspoon Old Bay seasoning (or Cajun seasoning)
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper

Steps:

  • Cut out the cabbage's core and use a food processor or a knife to shred the cabbage leaves. (I remove the outer layer of cabbage leaves first and discard them before chopping.)
  • Add the shredded cabbage and all the ingredients (onion, chicken apple cider vinegar, butter, Old Bay or Cajun seasoning, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper) into the Instant Pot stainless steel inner pot.
  • Sink the chopped cabbage as much as you can into the liquid broth.
  • Close the Instant Pot lid (make sure the valve is up - in the position for sealing) and pressure cook on high for 4 minutes.
  • When the cooking time is finished, allow a natural pressure release for at least 4 minutes.
  • To open the Instant Pot lid, move the valve to 'venting' and manually release any remaining pressure, if applicable.
  • Serve Black folks Southern cabbage recipe warm and enjoy!

napa cabbage (about 1-1/2 pounds) or green cabbage (about 1-1/2 pounds)
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar substitute
1/2 teaspoon hot pepper flakes
2 teaspoons caraway seeds
1/4 teaspoon salt
black pepper
1/4 cup water
1 red bell pepper, diced

Steps:

  • Core cabbage and slice thinly.
  • In a small saucepan, mix vinegar, fructose, pepper flakes,caraway seeds, salt, a few dashes of pepper and water;bring to a boil. Cook about 4 minutes and remove from heat.
  • Meanwhile, fill a large kettle with about 1 inch of water and bring to a boil.
  • Place cabbage slices and bell pepper in a steamer basket and place over water.
  • Steam, covered,3 minutes.
  • Remove to a serving bowl.
  • Pour sauce through a strainer over cabbage and toss well.
