  • Air. Air is one of the four classical elements and is often invoked in Wiccan ritual. Air is the element of the East, connected to the soul and the breath of life.
  • Ankh. The ankh is the ancient Egyptian symbol of eternal life. According to The Egyptian Book of Living and Dying, the ankh is the key to life. One theory is that the loop at the top symbolizes the rising sun, the horizontal bar represents feminine energy, and the vertical bar indicates masculine energy.
  • Celtic Shield Knot. The Celtic shield knot is used for warding and protection. Shield knots have appeared in cultures around the world and have taken a variety of different forms.
  • Earth. In the four classical elements, earth is considered the ultimate symbol of the divine feminine. In the spring, at the time of new growth and life, the earth quickens and grows full with the beginnings of each year's crop.
  • Eye of Horus. The Eye of Horus is sometimes referred to as the wedjat, and represents Horus, the Egyptian falcon-headed god. The Eye was used as a symbol of both protection and healing.
  • Eye of Ra. Similar to the Eye of Horus, the Eye of Ra is one of the most ancient magical symbols. Also called the udjat, the Eye of Ra is sometimes invoked as a sigil of protection.
  • Fire. In the symbolism of the four classical elements, fire is a purifying, masculine energy, associated with the South, and connected to strong will and energy.
  • Hecate's Wheel. Hecate's Wheel is a symbol used by some traditions of Wicca. It seems to be most popular among feminist traditions and represents the three aspects of the Goddess -- Maiden, Mother, and Crone.
  • Horned God. The Horned God symbol is one often used in Wicca to represent the masculine energy of the God. It is a symbol of an archetype, as often seen in Cernunnos, Herne, and other gods of vegetation and fertility.
  • Pentacle. The pentacle is a five-pointed star, or pentagram, contained within a circle. The five points of the star represent the four classical elements, along with a fifth element, which is typically either Spirit or Self, depending on your tradition.

  • The Elemental Symbols. Derived from ancient Greek philosophy, the elements of air, fire, water and earth are often invoked in Wiccan rituals, though the choices on how to represent them may vary.
  • The Pentagram. The pentagram is an upright five-pointed star, where the top symbolizes the spirit and each of the other points represents one of the four elements.
  • The Circle. A primary Wiccan symbol, the circle denotes infinity, wholeness, and unity. On the other hand, the so-called ritual circle, or the circle of the arts, serves as the sacred space where Wiccans perform rituals and spells.
  • The Triple Goddess. In Wicca, the moon goddess is seen as a triple goddess—maiden, mother and crone. Her symbol is the triple moon, where the maiden is associated with the waxing moon, the mother with the full moon, and the crone with the waning moon.
  • The Horned God. Another major deity in Wicca, the Horned God is the male counterpart of the moon goddess. He is represented by a full moon topped with a crescent moon that resembles a pair of horns, and sometimes portrayed as a man with a horned helmet.
  • Athame. The ritual dagger of Wiccans, the athame is traditionally comprised of a wooden handle, typically black, with a steel blade. It’s one of the four elemental tools used in Wicca, along with the pentagram, chalice, and wand.
  • Chalice. A symbol of containment and womb of the goddess, the chalice is used to hold wine during Wiccan rituals. It’s also associated with the element of water, as a portion of wine left in the chalice is said to be poured out as a libation to the goddess.
  • Wand. Depending on the Wiccan tradition, the wand may be associated with either air or fire. It’s a religious tool used in magic, and the origin of its use can be traced back to ancient tree worship.
  • The Witches’ Ladder. A length of cord tied with thirteen knots, the witches’ ladder is used in modern Wicca during meditation or chanting. Its purpose is to keep track of counting, where a Wiccan would slide his or her fingers along the cord during the chant.
  • Besom. A significant symbol in Wiccan practice, the besom or broom is symbolically used for purification or cleansing, as well as sweeping negative influences away from any place.
