SLOPPY JOE WITH BALL PARK BUNS
What's better than having a few beers and a tasty sloppy joe? This recipe is hearty, filling, and can be made before the tailgate. Make the sloppy joe meat before your leave for the tailgate, put it in Tupperware, and assemble them there.

Steps:
- In a sauté pan add olive oil, sweet Italian sausage, garlic cloves, and salt and pepper to taste. Cook meat for 15 minutes or until meat is fully browned. Once the meat has browned add in tomato sauce - let the meat simmer on low for 20 minutes. Add basil leaves and serve sloppy joe with Ball Park buns.
THE BEST SLOPPY JOES
This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Steps:
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

Steps:
- For the pretzel buns: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
- Form the dough into 4 buns. Make the desired slits on top of the buns and set aside.
- In a large pot, combine the baking soda and 4 quarts water. Bring to a boil and then add the buns; cook for 3 minutes. Remove the buns and set on a rack to dry. Brush with the egg whites and sprinkle with pretzel salt.
- Place the buns on a buttered baking sheet and bake for 12 minutes. Adjust the oven to 350 degrees F and continue baking until the buns are browned, another 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool.
- For the sloppy joes: In a large saute pan, heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onions, peppers and garlic, and cook until slightly softened, 5 minutes. Scrape into a bowl and set aside.
- Place the same skillet over high heat and add the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, about 6 minutes. Drain off the fat from the pan and add the chili powder, dry mustard and cayenne to the meat. Add the tomato paste, stirring to coat. Cook undisturbed for about 4 minutes to allow the tomato paste to caramelize.
- Add the onion mixture back to pan and then stir in the Worcestershire, maple syrup, red wine vinegar and root beer. Reduce heat to low and simmer until the liquid has reduced and the sauce thickened, 20 minutes. Serve hot on toasted pretzel buns. (Makes enough for 9 sandwiches.)

Steps:
- Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil and meat to the pan. Spread the meat around the pan and begin to break it up. Combine brown sugar and steak seasoning. Add sugar and spice mixture to the skillet and combine. When the meat has browned, add onion and red peppers to the skillet. Reduce heat to medium and cook onions, peppers, red wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce with meat for 5 minutes. Add tomato sauce and paste to pan. Stir to combine. Reduce heat to simmer and cook Sloppy Joe mixture 5 minutes longer. Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, pile sloppy meat onto toasted, buttered bun bottoms and cover with bun tops. Serve with your favorite sides or sliced tomatoes seasoned with salt and pepper, dill pickles and Deviled Potato Salad. Have plenty of napkins on hand!
- Boil potatoes in water seasoned with coarse salt until they are tender, about 10 minutes. Drain cooked potatoes and return to the warm pot to dry them out. Let the potatoes stand 2 minutes, then spread potatoes out on to a cookie sheet to quick-cool them.
- In the bottom of a medium mixing bowl, grate 1/4 onion using a hand grater. Add mustard and mayonnaise, paprika and cayenne pepper sauce to the grated onion and stir to combine. Add potatoes to the bowl and stir to evenly distribute dressing. Season potato salad with salt and pepper and taste to adjust your seasonings. Top servings of salad with chopped scallions.

Add the meat, increase the heat to medium-high and cook, breaking the meat up, until no longer pink, about 5 minutes.
- Spoon off any excess fat from the pan and discard. Add the tomato sauce, sugar, Worcestershire, mustard, vinegar and 1/2 cup of water and stir to combine. Bring to a simmer, cover and cook until the flavors have blended and the sauce has thickened slightly, 15 to 20 minutes. (If the mixture appears to be too dry add up to 1/4 cup additional water.) Season with the salt and pepper.
- Serve the beef mixture on toasted hamburger buns topped with shredded Cheddar and pickle chips.

I am allergic to onions so I am always looking for recipes that don't call for onions. This one is just fine without. I suppose you could add them while browning the hamburger. I'm guessing most of you will!

You don't want to miss this one. The recipe came with my electricity bill, probably some 39 years ago. I tried it and it was the best recipe for Sloppy Joes I have ever had. I've been making it ever since. Great taste and just the right amount of everything.

SLOPPY JOES
This is my adaptation of my mom's yummy sloppy joe recipe. I like to toast the buns, as they hold together a little better when they are toasty. I usually make a double batch, which gives us enough for dinner with leftovers for lunch. Times are estimated. Tip: my DH loves to add a slice of cheddar cheese before placing the bun top on. They are pretty tasty that way!
