SLOPPY JOES
You don't want to miss this one. The recipe came with my electricity bill, probably some 39 years ago. I tried it and it was the best recipe for Sloppy Joes I have ever had. I've been making it ever since. Great taste and just the right amount of everything.

Steps:
- Brown ground beef in a skillet along with the onion and green pepper.
- When brown, add the rest of the ingredients, stirring well.
- Put into a crock pot.
- Cook on low for 3-5 hours.
- Serve on hamburger buns.
- (This may be made on top of the stove on a very low heat for several hours, making sure that it does not get dry, but the flavors mix the best in a crock pot).

Steps:
- Start by browning the ground beef in a large pot over medium-high heat. Drain off the fat.
- Add in the green peppers and onions. Stir, and then add 1 cup water, the ketchup and garlic. Stir it around to combine, and then add the brown sugar, chili powder, dry mustard, red pepper flakes, and hot sauce, Worcestershire, salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine, and then cover and simmer over medium-low heat, about 20 minutes.
- To serve, spread the rolls with the butter and brown them on a griddle or in a skillet. Spoon a good amount of the meat mixture onto the bottom roll, and then top with the other half. Serve with chips, salad or just enjoy it by itself.
THE BEST SLOPPY JOES
This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Steps:
- Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
- Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.
CHEF JOHN'S SLOPPY JOES
The secret to a great 'Sloppy Joe' is a thick, rich, almost dry consistency, which allows it to be eaten two-fisted, sans fork.

BEST SLOPPY JOES
Who isn't looking for quick, healthy meal solutions during the busy holiday and shopping season? Here's a sophisticated twist on a kid favorite. My daughter, Tiffany, came up with this lower-fat version of traditional sloppy joes. Best of all, this recipe can be made ahead and frozen for real holiday convenience. However, the tangy kick from the orange peel may not appeal to all children. -Suzanne McKinley, Lyons, Georgia

THE SLOPPY JO
Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Cube the pork shoulder, cutting off any excess fat. Lay the pork on a sheet pan and salt both sides of the pork. Cover the pork in the Red Chile Sauce and cover the pan with foil. Bake the pork for 3 hours. Remove the foil and cook for another 30 minutes. The pork should be very tender and easy to pull when done. Serve the pork in a bowl topped with a fried egg and Pickled Onions. The flour tortilla is to be served warm on the side.
- Combine the chiles, orange juice, oil, garlic salt and cumin in a large saucepan over low heat. Add 6 cups warm water. Simmer for 25 minutes until desired consistency.
- Combine the orange and lime juices, salt, sugar and jalapeno. Shock the onions in boiling water for 15 seconds, and then put directly into the juice mixture. Let sit for at least 2 hours.
SLOPPY JOES
Steps:
- In a large saute pan, heat the oil over medium-low heat, add the onions, saute for 5 minutes. Add the peppers and cook for 5 minutes more. Stir in the garlic and marjoram, continue to cook for 2 minutes more. Transfer vegetables to a bowl with a slotted spoon and reserve. Add the meat to the pan, increase the heat to medium, and cook the meat, breaking it up with a wooded spoon, until it just loses it's color about 5 minutes. Pour excess fat from the pan and discard. Combine the meat and vegetables in the pan along with the tomato sauce, sugar, Worcestershire, vinegar, mustard, and 1/2 cup of the water. Bring the mixture to a simmer, cover, and cook for 20 minutes. (If the mixture appears to be too dry add the additional water.) Season with the salt and pepper to taste. When ready to serve divide the mixture evenly between the buns. Serve.

EASY WEEKNIGHT SLOPPY JOES
This is found in my recipe collection under "Mrs. McCann's Barbeque". It was handed down from a neighbor of my great-aunt's sometime in the 1940's. I prefer to use ground round so there isn't so much fat. Gets better the longer it simmers.

I am allergic to onions so I am always looking for recipes that don't call for onions. This one is just fine without. I suppose you could add them while browning the hamburger. I'm guessing most of you will!
