SLOPPY TURKEY JOES

Sloppy Turkey Joes image

Note: This recipe method is written for children to follow, too. Adult helpers are referred to as GHs, or Grown Helpers.

Provided by Rachael Ray : Food Network

Categories     main-dish

Time 30m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, 2 turns of the pan
1 package, 1 1/3 pounds, ground turkey breast or lean ground turkey
1/2 red onion
1/2 red bell pepper
1 tablespoon grill seasoning blend (recommended: McCormick Montreal Grill Seasoning or Mrs. Dash seasoning for poultry)
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 cup tomato sauce,( 8- ounce) can
4 crusty sandwich rolls, split
12 celery sticks, available in produce department or Grown Helper can chop
12 carrot sticks, also available in produce department or grown helper can chop
Cheese Fries, recipe follows

Steps:

  • Have a GH (grown helper) place a big skillet over medium high heat for you. Use some kitchen scissors to cut the turkey package open. Add some extra-virgin olive oil, 2 turns of the pan in a nice, slow stream. Have the GH add the ground turkey to the pan, in case it spatters. Break the turkey up with a big wooden spoon as it starts to cook. If anyone touches the raw turkey, they should go wash their hands.
  • If you are a really good chopper, using a small, sharp knife chop up some red onion. Remember when you are chopping to keep the fingers that are not holding the knife all tucked in and curled under. Have a GH help you. You need half a red onion chopped up small. Pull the seeds and white membrane and the top out of a half red bell pepper and chop that up small too. Add the veggies to the cooking meat and stir it all together.
  • Next, mix in a small bowl: grill seasoning blend, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce and the tomato sauce. This will make your special sauce. When all the ingredients are combined, pour the sauce evenly over the meat and stir everything together really well. Turn the heat down to simmer and cook the sloppy mixture for 10 minutes. Blow on a spoonful until cool and taste it to see if you need to adjust the seasoning.
  • Have the GH help you serve. Place a bun bottom on a plate. Use a big ice cream scoop to get a pile of sloppy meat onto the bun. Put bun top in place and serve with vegetable sticks on the side and Cheese Fries.
  • 1 sack frozen French fries, any brand or shape - crinkle cut, thin cut, steak cut, waffle fries - prepared to package directions
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 2 1/2 cups, (10-ounce) sack shredded yellow Cheddar
  • 3 squirts ketchup, about 1/4 cup
  • Have your GH (Grown Helper) put fries in oven on a cookie sheet. While fries are baking in the oven, have a GH place a sauce pot on the stove and heat it over medium heat. Add butter and melt it. Add the flour and stir. Cook butter and flour together for 1 minute or so. This is called "roux" (like Tiger and Roo with Pooh Bear) and it helps to thicken up sauces. Use a whisk to stir as the milk goes into the pot. Keep stirring until the milk gets thicker. Use a wooden spoon or heat-safe spatula to stir in the cheese. When all of the cheese melts, take the sauce off the heat and stir in 3 squirts of ketchup. This is your SECRET ingredient. When everyone asks what you put in your cheese sauce that makes it taste so good, just say milk and cheese, you can NEVER tell what secret ingredients you add! Tell your GH to keep the secret, too or they can never help you again!
  • Pour the sauce over the fries or serve the sauce on the side if you like to dipping better.
  • Yield: 4 to 6 servings
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook Time: 12 minutes

THE BEST SLOPPY JOES

The Best Sloppy Joes image

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     main-dish

Time 30m

Yield 4 to 6 sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pound lean ground beef
12 ounces (1 1/3 cup) tomato sauce
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon paprika
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 hamburger buns, toasted

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

Time 3h20m

Yield 6 to 10 servings

Number Of Ingredients 27

1/2 pound bacon, coarsely chopped
2 large sweet onions, chopped
2 pounds course ground beef
Jerk BBQ Sauce, recipe follows
Your favorite rolls or bread, for serving
Cheddar and/or Swiss cheese, for serving
1/2 Jerk Base recipe, recipe follows
4 cups vinegar-based, store-bought BBQ Sauce
2 cups orange blossom honey (any honey will work)
4 large yellow onions, roughly chopped
2 bunches green onion, roots removed and chopped
4 jalapeno or habanero pepper, chopped
1/2 cup white sugar
5 tablespoons dark brown sugar
6 teaspoons ground cayenne pepper
2 tablespoons ground allspice
2 tablespoons ground thyme
2 tablespoons ground black pepper
2 1/2 teaspoons ground sage
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3 cups white vinegar
2 cups fresh-squeezed orange juice
1 1/2 cups soy sauce
1 cup dark rum (recommended: Myer's)
1 cup olive oil
1/3 cup fresh-squeezed lime juice

Steps:

  • Add the chopped bacon to a large saucepot and cook until very crisp and browned. Remove the bacon from pan. Add the chopped onion saute until very caramelized. Remove the onions from the pan and, in batches, brown the beef. Remove from the pan and use strainer to drain off as much of the fat as you can. Once drained, add all the cooked ingredients back to the pot and add enough of the jerk BBQ Sauce to almost cover. Simmer over low heat for 1 1/2 hours, you may need to add more BBQ to get it to the sloppy stage. Serve on your favorite rolls or bread with Cheddar or Swiss cheese. This recipe was provided by professional chefs and has been scaled down from a bulk recipe provided by a restaurant. The Food Network Kitchens chefs have not tested this recipe, in the proportions indicated, and therefore, we cannot make any representation as to the results.
  • For the jerk BBQ sauce: Combine 1/2 the Jerk Base recipe with the store-bought BBQ sauce and honey in a large bowl and stir to blend.
  • For the jerk base: Combine the yellow onions, green onions, jalapeno pepper, white sugar, brown sugar, cayenne, allspice, thyme, pepper, sage, nutmeg, cinnamon, vinegar, orange juice, soy sauce, rum, oil and lime juice and simmer for 1 1/2 hours. When onions are very tender remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature. In batches, use blender to puree until smooth.

HOMEMADE SLOPPY JOES

Homemade Sloppy Joes image

Despite the name of this iconic retro dish, the secret to a great sloppy joe is a thick, rich, almost dry consistency, which allows the sandwich to be eaten with your hands. Serve on hamburger buns.

Provided by Chef John

Categories     Main Dish Recipes     Sandwich Recipes     Sloppy Joe Recipes

Time 1h10m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 ½ pounds extra lean ground beef
½ onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 green pepper, diced
1 cup water
¾ cup ketchup
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 ½ teaspoons salt, or to taste
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup water
1 pinch cayenne pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Place ground beef and onion in a large skillet. Turn heat to medium and cook and stir the mixture constantly until the beef is browned and forms small crumbles, about 10 minutes.
  • Stir in garlic and green bell pepper; cook and stir until softened, 2 to 3 minutes. Add 1 cup water and stir, scraping the pan to dissolve any brown flavor bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  • Mix in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper. Add 1 more cup water and return mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has evaporated and the mixture is thick, about 40 minutes.
  • Season with salt , black pepper, and cayenne pepper to taste.

Provided by Gianni 23

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 25m

Yield 1 sandwich, 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 17

1 tablespoon coconut oil, divided
1 teaspoon coconut oil, divided
1 medium onion, diced medium
1 lb seitan, chopped into bite sized pieces
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme
1 tablespoon sweet paprika
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
3 dashes fresh black pepper
14 ounces crushed tomatoes
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
2 teaspoons yellow mustard

Steps:

  • Preheat a large, heavy bottomed pan over medium-high heat. Saute onion in one tablespoon coconut oil and a pinch of salt, until translucent, 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Add the seitan and cook for about 10 minutes, until nicely browned, stirring often. Push the seitan and onions to one side of the pan so that you have space to quickly saute the garlic and ginger. Put the remaining teaspoon of coconut oil in the pan and toss in the garlic and ginger, stirring as it sizzles, for about 15 seconds. Then mix it up with the seitan and onions.
  • Add thyme, paprika, salt, allspice, red pepper flakes, cinnamon and black pepper and toss to coat everything and cook the spices a bit.
  • Add the tomatoes, and cook for about 10 more minutes, tossing often. Lastly, mix in the maple syrup, lime juice and mustard. Let cook for a minute or so, then taste for salt and seasonings, and serve.
  • Serve on your choice of buns or bread, and her coconut cream spinach sounds like a perfect topping.
