SIMPLE STEWED PRUNES

Simple Stewed Prunes image

This recipe is so simple I hate to post it however there isn't one on Recipezaar even close so here goes. I have posted 1 cup of water however if your prunes are large you want to have the water at least 1/4" above the prunes. I don't use sugar but it may be added.

MY GRANDMA'S NATURAL REMEDY FOR CONSTIPATION (STEWED PRUNES)

My Grandma's Natural Remedy for Constipation (Stewed Prunes) image

My sweet grandma used stewed prunes as a natural laxative, but my mom likes to eat them as a simple and healthy dessert because slow simmering softens and thickens dried plums into a sweet syrupy goodness. Healthier than taking Ex-lax.

Provided by Garden Gate Kate

Categories     Breakfast

Time 31m

Yield 15 stewed prunes, 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

15 pitted prunes (dried plums)
1 1/2 cups water
1 -2 tablespoon orange juice (optional)
milk, as desired (optional)

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, place prunes, water, and orange juice. Bring to boil, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Prunes will absorb most of the water, and the remaining water will thicken into a consistency of syrup. If there is a lot of liquid remaining, simmer, uncovered, for a few minutes until sauce reduces.
  • Transfer hot prunes and syrup to a bowl. Pour cold milk over the prunes to cover. Eat with a spoon.
  • HINT: This remedy should work within 24 hours and can be safely eaten as often and as long as needed.
  • NOTE: If you do not have constipation and just like the taste of stewed prunes, you may add 1/8 teaspoon of ground cinnamon to the prunes mixture before cooking (Cinnamon, oranges, and prunes pair well together.) However, do not add the cinnamon if you are using this for constipation because cinnamon is used as a natural cure for diarrhea and will have the opposite effect of a laxative.
  • One cup prunes contains 1274 mg of potassium, which prevents muscle cramps, and 12 grams of fiber to relieve constipation.

BEEF STEW WITH PRUNES

Beef Stew With Prunes image

Braised dishes like this beef stew may feature green, orange, yellow or red vegetables but their most appetizing color is brown, the shade of brown whose glossy darkness shouts intensity and richness. The key to achieving that glorious color and flavor is sufficient browning of the meat. Don't rush. The good thing is, this savory-sweet stew can almost be ignored while it is cooking and can be made in advance, the night - or even two - before you serve it. Couscous makes a great accompaniment, as does saffron rice, because those bring out the color of the stew. Plain crusty bread is another great option. This is simple cold weather food at its most appealing.

Time 2h

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 14

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 pounds lean boneless beef, preferably chuck, in 2-inch cubes
Salt and pepper to taste
1 onion, peeled and chopped
3 plum tomatoes, stemmed and chopped (canned are fine)
1 teaspoon sweet paprika, more to taste
1 cinnamon stick
1 bay leaf
1 cup chicken stock
1 cup dry red wine
2 tablespoons sugar
1 cup pitted prunes
1 tablespoon sherry vinegar or other vinegar, or to taste
Chopped parsley leaves for garnish

Steps:

  • Place a deep skillet or casserole that can be covered over medium-high heat, and add oil. Brown meat well on all sides, seasoning with salt and pepper, for 10 minutes; remove with a slotted spoon.
  • In same pot over medium-high heat, sauté onion and tomatoes with a large pinch of salt and some pepper. When they soften, about 5 minutes, stir in paprika, cinnamon, and bay leaf. Return meat to pan, and add stock and wine; bring to a boil, then lower heat, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes. If mixture starts to dry, add a little water or stock.
  • Remove cinnamon and bay leaf, and stir in sugar and prunes. Simmer until prunes and meat are soft, another 30 to 45 minutes. (Dish can be made in advance to this point; let sit for a few hours, or cover and refrigerate for up to a day before reheating and proceeding.) When meat is very tender, uncover pot and add vinegar; if necessary, raise heat so sauce thickens and becomes glossy. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and serve hot, garnished with parsley.

STEWED PRUNES

Stewed Prunes image

I have eaten prunes this way as long as I can remember in my family. My grandmother made stewed prunes this way, my mother did, and I do too. Simple and delicious and taste so nice. Enjoy on their own, or on your breakfast cereal, or with ice cream, or mixed with other fruit.

Time 20m

Yield 4-6 cups, 12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

500 g dried prunes
3 cups hot water
1/4-1/3 cup white sugar

Steps:

  • Combine all the ingredients into a medium saucepan. Cover. Bring to the boil, give a stir or 2 and then turn the heat down and simmer covered for 15 minutes. At the end of the 15 minute cooking time turn the heat off and leave on the stove for 10 minutes. Pour into a dish large enough to contain the contents of the saucepan. Cool. When cool, cover (so nothing in the fridge falls into or spills into the dish), and put in the fridge. Eat!

  • Place the prunes and lemon half in a non-reactive pot over medium-high heat. Drizzle with the maple syrup and add enough water to just cover the fruit. Bring to a boil.
  • Cover and turn the heat down to low, and simmer gently for about 30 to 35 minutes, turning the prunes every so often, adding water if they look too dry. The liquid will be syrupy and the prunes will have softened and swelled up when ready.
  • Remove from the heat and let the prunes cool. Transfer to a container. They will keep refrigerated for up to a week, if they last that long! Eat them as is, or with a dollop of Greek yogurt.
