A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO FIREPLACE REFACING - THE FAMILY …

- Pr otect Your Floor. This project calls for the ultimate floor protection. Start with a layer of rosin paper taped at the seams and edges. Then cut sheets of hardboard to fit around the fireplace and join them with duct tape.
- Chip Out the Corbels. After removing the mantel (ours wasn’t even fastened), chip out the corbels with a maul and a brick set chisel. Note: These bricks were embedded, but I lightly chipped all the way around them and eventually they sheared right off.
- Bust Up the Hearth. With a brick set chisel and a maul, start chipping away at the corner of the hearth. After peeling away the first layer, I thought the hearth was solid brick.
- Ch ange of Plans! Most DIY projects include some surprises and require on-the-spot problem solving. In this case, I had intended to leave the brick ledge underneath the firebox.
- Fill the Empty Hearth Space. To fill the void left by removing the hearth, I built up the ledge in front of the fireplace. I set the 2×4 ledge 1/2-in. inside the opening, screwed it to the floor and anchored it into the brick at the sides.
- Cut the Tile. There are a few things to know about using a tile saw. Keep the blade cool with water and cut slow, especially through the last inch of tile.
- Tile the Floor First. Cut metal tile edging to fit around the perimeter of the floor tile. Apply thin-set to the floor with a 3/4-in. round-notch trowel and press the metal edging into the thin-set.
- Cut the Trim. Instead of cutting the tile to fit the profile of the trim, cut the trim back and slip the tile against the wall. It’s much easier! To cut the trim, use a piece of tile and a piece of hardboard as spacers and a guide for your multitool.
- Then Start on the Sides. Tile the sides first so the tile edges will be covered by the tiles on the face of the fireplace. Pro tip: Throughout this project, plan your cuts so that factory edges will meet other tiles and cut edges won’t.
- Emb ed the Edging. Install edging over the sides of the fireplace and surrounding the firebox. Cover the edge of the tiles with metal edging. Spread thin-set near the corner and press the edging into the thin-set.

21 BEFORE-AND-AFTER FIREPLACE MAKEOVERS THAT EXUDE …
From bhg.com
- Before: Awkward Corner Fireplace. Tucked into a corner, this fireplace didn't serve as the room's natural focal point. However, it received more attention than it deserved due to its dark brown marble and traditional white mantelpiece.
- After: Modern Fireplace Update. This fireplace makeover created a fresh, modern look without altering the footprint. A new clean-lined mantel helps downplay the small corner fireplace instead of making it stand out.
- Before: Dark and Dated Fireplace. The fireplace in this 1907 Craftsman home featured charming details but lacked polish. The dark wood paneling and crumbling brick surround begged for a modern update.
- After: Contemporary Fireplace Makeover. The old wood and brick fireplace was replaced with a modern, minimalistic fireplace surround. To make up for the room's lack of storage space, simple display shelves now line either side of the fireplace.
- Before: Plain White Fireplace. This bland fireplace design had no standout features. With a plain white surround and mantel, it faded in with the room's neutral walls.
- After: Beautiful Black Fireplace. The brick fireplace remodel features contemporary style and adds subtle texture to the otherwise white room and furnishings.
- Before: Builder-Basic Fireplace. Covered in 12x12-inch tiles, this fireplace wall was unimpressive. The area also featured painted drywall and basic cabinets that lacked personality and gave the room a builder-grade appearance.
- After: Rustic Fireplace Makeover. Rustic wood surfaces introduce new character to this living room fireplace. Reclaimed barnwood planks, installed vertically to accentuate the tall ceiling, cover the chimney wall with timeworn texture.
- Before: Off-Balance Space. With a large built-in entertainment center competing with the adjacent fireplace, this living room lacked balance and a true focal point.
- After: New Focal Point. Moving the gas-burning firebox to the left and adding matching built-ins on either side refocused the attention on the fireplace.
