- White vinegar. This is the most gentle means to remove silicone caulk residue. Mix water and white vinegar in a 1:2 ratio. Apply the substance to the caulk residue and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
- Isopropyl alcohol. Opt for this product to remove silicone caulk from painted surfaces or plastic. For the best results, use industrial-grade isopropyl alcohol.
- WD-40. WD-40 is a harsh solvent that can easily remove silicone caulk residue. First, clean the area with soap and water so that the WD-40 will be able to properly adhere to the residue.
- Mineral spirits. Use this solvent to remove silicone caulk from concrete, marble, or porcelain. Apply mineral spirits to a scrubbing pad and wipe down the caulk residue.
- Acetone. Acetone removes polyurethane caulk residue from glass and unpainted wood. Apply the acetone to a damp cloth and wipe down the caulk residue. This will hopefully soften the residue and allow you to remove it with the cloth.
- Nail polish remover. Use this as an alternative to acetone. It will be able to get rid of polyurethane caulk just as well. Pour nail polish remover onto a damp rag and use it to clean off the caulk residue.
- Goo Gone Caulk Remover. This is best for removing latex-based caulk. First, spray the product onto the residue. Let it sit for 2-5 minutes. Next, scrape off the residue with a putty knife.
- Baby oil or body lotion. Use either of these to remove latex caulk residue from wood. They're both gentle enough to prevent damaging the wood's surface. Since wood is sensitive to damage, avoid using harsh solvents.
- Utility knife. Sometimes you don't need to use a solvent to remove caulk residue. If you don't have any of the listed detergents or you want to avoid using harsh chemicals, try using a utility knife instead.
- Putty knife or caulking spatula. Try either of these options to remove caulk from wood. Both are gentle enough to remove caulk and caulk residue from such an easily scratched surface.
