Ingredients

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons active dry yeast
2 teaspoons white sugar
1 egg
1 egg white
¼ cup warm milk
water as needed
¾ stick unsalted butter, melted
1 egg, lightly beaten

Steps:

Place flour into a bowl, creating a small hole in the center. Sprinkle salt around the edge and place yeast and sugar into the hole.
Mix egg and egg white together in a 2-cup measuring cup. Add enough water to reach the 1 1/4 cup mark. Stir in milk. Add melted butter. Pour into the center of the flour. Mix thoroughly, adding more milk or flour as needed until dough is smooth and elastic. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let rise for 30 minutes.
Cut dough in 1/2. Form each 1/2 into a long roll. Lay rolls out in front of you on a work surface in an 'X' shape. Braid bread by constantly switching the ends. Place bread onto a baking sheet, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for 15 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
Brush bread with beaten egg using a pastry brush.
Bake in the preheated oven on the middle rack until golden, about 30 minutes.

Ingredients

3 cups warm water
1 (7-gram or .25-ounce) packet active dry yeast
5 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons honey
All-purpose flour, for countertop
1 egg

Steps:

In a bowl, stir together the water and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes.
In a stand mixer, with a paddle attachment, mix the flour and salt. Pour the yeast into the flour and add the honey. Mix slowly until the mixture is just incorporated and the dough is formed.
Remove the dough from the mixer and knead by hand on a lightly-floured surface. Knead for 1 minute.
Place the dough in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let sit for 30 minutes.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly-floured surface and roll into a loaf shape. With kitchen scissors, or a sharp paring knife, cut 6 notches into the dough at a 45-degree angle. Take one piece of dough and pull it left, the next piece of dough, pull right. Repeat with all pieces until you have a shape that resembles leaves on a branch. Transfer to a baking sheet and let rest for 20 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Using a fork, beat the egg with 1 teaspoon water and brush the egg wash onto the top of the bread. Bake the bread for 20 minutes, or until golden and baked through.

This is a batter bread, and one my mom made often when we were still at home. This bread only has one rising. I have doubled this recipe for 2 loaves with fine results. Leftovers make awesome French Toast the next day!

Ingredients

1 (1/4 ounce) package dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1 cup cool water (just from the tap)
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups flour
butter, for glazing top of loaf

Steps:

Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the cool water, sugar, butter, salt and flour. Mix well. Pour into well-greased loaf pan and let rise in warm place for 1 hour.
Bake in preheated 450 degree oven for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 300 degrees and bake 30 minutes longer.
Remove from oven and glaze with melted butter in pan before turning loaf out to cool on rack.
