PORTUGUESE LEMONADE



Portuguese Lemonade image

A spicy sparkling lemonade. You can make this an adult beverage by substituting white Vinho Verde (a young semi-sparkling wine from Portugal) for the carbonated seltzer. CAUTION: Bird's eye chiles are very hot.

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 - red bird's eye chili
7 - meyer lemons
1 cup(s) honey
2 tablespoon(s) fresh minced cilantro
1 liter(s) sparkling water, unflavored (well chilled)

Steps:

  • Place the chili in a 1 1/2 liter pitcher and crush with a pestle.
  • Slice one lemon and set aside. Juice remaining lemons and pour juice into the pitcher.
  • Warm the honey slightly in a microwave and add to the juice, stirring well.
  • Add the cilantro and lemon slices.
  • Just before serving, add sparkling water to pitcher and stir lightly. Serve over ice.

1 cup honey (orange blossom is good)
2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, minced
1 liter seltzer water, well chilled (or sparkling water, unflavored)

Steps:

  • Place the pepper in a 1 1/2 liter pitcher and crush with a pestle.
  • Juice 6 of the lemons and pour the juice into the pitcher.
  • Warm the honey slightly in a microwave and add to the juice, stirring well.
  • Add the cilantro and lemon slices.
  • Just before serving, add seltzer to pitcher and stir lightly.
  • Serve over ice.
