  • Seaweed and Sea Vegetables. Iodine, found in seaweed and sea vegetables, is one of the two primary building blocks of thyroid hormone. As I explain in my book, The Thyroid Connection, if you don’t have enough iodine, your thyroid simply can’t produce its hormones.
  • Beef, Chicken, and Other Animal Protein. Animal proteins are “complete” proteins, meaning they contain all 9 essential amino acids, which your body cannot produce on its own.
  • Leafy Greens. Your thyroid and your entire immune system are dependent on a host of B vitamins to operate efficiently. Leafy greens such as kale, arugula, bok choy, spinach, and watercress are an excellent source of the B vitamins needed to support your immune system.
  • Salmon. The Omega-3s found in salmon have been shown to reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and fight systemic inflammation in the body that leads to diseases such as Hashimoto’s.
  • Avocado. Avocados are extremely popular right now, and you can find them in everything from chocolate cakes to smoothies! They are technically a fruit, however, they are unique because they contain 15 grams of healthy fats and 20 different vitamins and minerals (including B vitamins, iron, zinc, vitamin K, and folate) that suppress inflammation and support your immune system.
  • Bone Broth. The health benefits of bone broth are immense! Bone broth is made from cooking animal bones along with the connective tissues, and it is an amazing source of collagen, which is broken down into gelatin during cooking.
  • Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, and Other Orange Fruits & Vegetables. Bright orange fruits and veggies are rich in vitamin A, which is needed for healthy immune function and to bring your active thyroid hormone into your cells.

  • Gluten. If you’ve had Hashimoto’s for any length of time then you probably already know that you should avoid gluten. I am not going to harp on this topic for too long because this should really be something that you know already.
  • Iodized Salt. Next on the list is iodized salt! But I don’t want you to confuse iodized salt with iodine because they are NOT the same thing. Iodized salt is simply salt that has been fortified with iodine (iodine has been added to it).
  • Dairy products. Dairy is another no-brainer food group to avoid if you have Hashimoto’s. Why? Well, for starters, a huge percentage of people have problems digesting dairy and this number is as high as 70% of people when you look at studies (2).
  • Soy. Any product that contains soy should also be avoided if you have Hashimoto’s. This can be harder than you think because soy is often found in many foods and it’s not always obvious that it’s there.
  • Coffee. Don’t shoot the messenger! Coffee is something that you should NOT be consuming if you have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or any sort of thyroid problem.
  • Alcohol. You can and should think of alcohol as poison to your thyroid gland. Alcohol not only has the ability to poison or damage cells in your body, but it also has a direct negative effect on your pituitary gland and thyroid function.
  • Processed Foods. Processed foods should pretty much be avoided whether you have Hashimoto’s or not but they should DEFINITELY be avoided if you have Hashimoto’s.
  • Processed Sugar. Most people will tell you that you need to avoid sugar 100% if you have Hashimoto’s, especially if you are overweight. There actually isn’t a lot of evidence to suggest that consuming sugar, healthy sugars anyway, is harmful directly to your thyroid gland.
  • Bad Oils and Fats. If there is one section that I want you to take extra seriously it’s this section. Consuming bad oils, in my opinion, is one of the main reasons that the health of our nation has declined so rapidly over the last 20-30 years.
  • Certain Vegetables (if eaten raw in LARGE quantities) This is sort of a sneaky addition but it’s worth spending a little bit of time on. Vegetables, in general, are AMAZING for your thyroid health and your overall health.

  • Goitrogens should be avoided if you have Hashimoto’s, so I can’t eat broccoli. Those poor cruciferous vegetables! Delicious and healthy vegetables like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, and cauliflower have gotten a bad rap due to some old nomenclature and outdated patterns in thyroid disease.
  • I do not need to stop eating gluten, because tests indicate that I am not sensitive. Gluten is a substance found in wheat, barley, and rye, and is a staple of the standard Western diet.
  • Almonds are a “health food,” so I should eat them every day. In an effort to eat a healthier, nutrient-dense diet, many people turn to almonds as a substitute for eating grains.
  • The best source of selenium is Brazil nuts. Selenium is a trace mineral that plays a critical role in thyroid function, and a deficiency in it has widely been recognized as an environmental trigger for Hashimoto’s.
  • Raw dairy is fine for Hashimoto’s, as it’s only pasteurized dairy that’s problematic. Proponents of this myth have probably heard or read information about how the pasteurization process changes the protein structure of dairy proteins, making them more reactive.
  • Low-carb eating is bad for people with thyroid issues. It may come as a surprise, but carbohydrates are not a required element in our diet. Research suggests that around 45 percent of people with Hashimoto’s may have carbohydrate metabolism issues.
  • Dietary changes can heal everything, so if I just eliminate more foods, I will be healed. While some people have had great success through changing their diets, even going into complete remission from Hashimoto’s, this is not always the case.
  • I’m vegan/vegetarian, so my diet is already thyroid-friendly. I’m a proponent of eating plenty of plant-based, nutrient-dense foods! But I also know from clinical experience that an exclusively vegan diet (or even a vegetarian one) is usually not the most helpful for those trying to heal their Hashimoto’s.
  • I already eat a nutrient-dense diet, so I don’t need to supplement. Along with incorporating foods that can heal the thyroid, such as high-quality protein and organic produce that contain the right vitamins and minerals, we must also ensure our bodies have the capacity to absorb these nutrients properly.
