1 1/2 cups Corn Chex
1 1/2 cups Wheat Chex
1 1/2 cups Rice Chex
2 cups oyster crackers
2 cups pretzel twists
1 cup pistachio nut
4 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
1/4 cup melted butter
1 (1 ounce) package dry ranch dressing mix
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 250°F.
  • In a large bowl combine the cereal, oyster crackers, pretzels, pistachios and cheese.
  • In a small bowl combine the butter, salad dressing mix, and garlic powder.
  • Drizzle over the cereal mix, tossing to lightly coat mixture.
  • Place on a cookie or baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes.
  • Remove and let cool completely before packing in jars.

1 (3 1/2 ounce) bag micorwave popcorn (I used pop secret homestyle)
3 cups Corn Chex
2 cups Rice Chex
3 cups Wheat Chex
4 cups cheese crackers (I used the small square kind)
3 tablespoons butter, melted
2/3 cup parmesan cheese

Steps:

  • Microwve the popcorn as directed on bag.
  • In a large zip lock bag, mix the cereals and popcorn. drizzle butter on top, close bag and shake to coat well. Add cheese; seal bag. Shake.
  • Makes 42 1/2 cup servings.

This came from my Southern Living magazine in an article about homemade food gifts for the holidays. I think nothing says love better than something homemade. It means you took time and thought into making someone a gift. Their suggestions for use are to toss with pasta, veggies, or popcorn, sprinkle over salads, mix with butter and baste hot baked bread with it, or use it in flour for breading chicken.

1 (8 ounce) container grated parmesan cheese
3 tablespoons dried Italian seasoning
3 tablespoons dried parsley flakes

  • Stir together all the ingredients. Package mixture in airtight containers and store in in a cool place or in the refrigerator.

Another recipe from my "Gifts in a Bag" recipe book. Because this one uses parmesan cheese I never give it in a bag, or jar. I'm afraid the cheese will mold before it is used. Usually I give all these dips in a basket and include this one already mixed up and chilled in a pretty jelly jar decorated with ribbon and the recipe attached. I also include a couple boxes of crackers and some chips. Great gifts for a new neighbor moving in. Cook time is chill time.

2 tablespoons parmesan cheese (grated)
1 tablespoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon minced onion
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/8 teaspoon black pepper or 1/8 teaspoon white pepper
1 cup mayonnaise
1 cup sour cream

Steps:

  • Combine the above ingredients and stir until well blended.
  • Cover and refrigerate.
  • Dip is better if chilled 8 hours or more before serving.
  • Stir well before serving.
  • Serve with chip, crackers or fresh vegetables.

Another stupidly simple side dish made from pantry staples that my family asks for over and over. The savory combination of flavors goes well with many other foods. It can be made with freshly-cooked pasta or with leftover, cooked pasta that has no sauce on it. I've included options for some variations to create not-so-simple but extremely tasty side dishes or complete, one-dish meals by adding ingredients you probably have on hand.

1 lb pasta, cooked (any type)
3 -4 tablespoons butter or 3 -4 tablespoons olive oil
1/4-1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese
1/8-1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
fresh ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Put pasta into a microwavable dish large enough to give you a little room for stirring and tossing.
  • Dot pasta with butter or drizzle with olive oil.
  • Sprinkle Parmesan over top. Add plenty of fresh-ground, black pepper.
  • Heat in microwave on high 3 to 5 minute at a time, stirring frequently, until thoroughly hot.
  • Serve, passing the pepper grinder at the table.
  • You can add 1-2 cups of cooked meat (chicken, turkey, and ham are all especially good), and/or 1-3 cups pre-cooked, chopped vegetables. I particularly recommend broccoli, zucchini, onions, and/or green, snap, or snow peas.
