Also known as Vengaya Chutney in the Tamil language, Onion Chutney is a simple recipe that can be easily made at home. Here's how you can make it in easy steps!South Indian cuisine is full of spices, and every dish is full of flavours. All the dishes are accompanied by several chutneys like tomato chutney, coconut chutney and even onion chutney; which increases the taste of all the dishes. Onion chutney is loaded with flavours and is prepared using urad dal, onion, tamarind, red chillies, mustard seeds and a little salt. This side dish recipe can be prepared in just 20 minutes, and the colour of this chutney varies as some use more red chillies in it. This chutney recipe has a sweet & spicy flavour and is best enjoyed with idli, dosa and even uttapam. So, what are you wondering? Try this easy chutney recipe and enjoy with your loved ones!

8 medium onion peeled
7 Numbers red chilli
2 tablespoon tamarind
1/2 teaspoon urad dal
0 As required salt
2 1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds

Steps:

  • For making this dip recipe, peel and chop the onions.
  • Heat oil in a pan over medium-high flame. Saute the onions, red chillies, tamarind and salt for 4 to 5 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool.
  • Grind the mixture to a smooth and thick paste, adding little water.
  • Fry the mustard seeds and urad dal for few seconds. Pour over the chutney and stir once. Serve onion chutney as a side dish.

500g red onion, finely sliced
1kg tomato, chopped
4 garlic cloves, sliced
1 red chilli, chopped (optional)
4cm piece ginger, peeled and chopped
250g brown sugar
150ml red wine vinegar
5 cardamom seeds
½ tsp paprika

Steps:

  • Tip all the ingredients into a large heavy-based pan and bring to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently. Simmer for 1 hr, then bring to a gentle boil so that the mixture turns dark, jammy and shiny. Place into sterilised jars and allow to cool before covering. Will keep for 6 weeks.
