This old fashioned coffee cake recipe comes to us from the Los Angeles Unified School District, where it has been beloved by generations of students since the 1950s.

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp nutmeg
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 large egg, at room temperature
1 cup buttermilk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 F and grease a 9 x 13-inch cake pan with butter. Line with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, mix flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, nutmeg, and vegetable oil. Stir with a rubber spatula until crumbly. Set 1/2 cup aside in a small bowl, and combine with cinnamon.
  • Add the remaining ingredients into the the large bowl and stir to combine.
  • Pour the coffee cake batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top of the batter. Scatter the streusel mixture over the top of the cake batter, ensuring that there are some big crumbs for extra crunch.
  • Bake the cake on an oven rack in the center of the oven for 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown and a cake tester inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Remove to a wire rack to cool for 5 minutes.
  • Remove the crumb cake from the pan and cut the cake into 15 slices and sprinkle the top of the warm cake with confectioners sugar.

1/2 cup butter, softened
1-1/4 cups sugar, divided
1 large egg
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1-1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg, divided
1 cup buttermilk

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, cream butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg. Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and 1 teaspoon nutmeg; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Pour into a greased 9-in. square baking pan (batter will be thick). , Combine the remaining sugar and nutmeg; sprinkle over batter. Bake at 350° for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack.

4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups butter, softened
2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
7 large eggs
1 cup extra strong coffee, double-strength, at room temperature
powdered sugar, for sprinkling over the pound cake

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350F and butter a 10-inch tube pan.
  • Mix the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt in a medium bowl, set aside.
  • Beat the butter and granulated sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer set on medium speed until light and fluffly.
  • Add the eggs, 1` at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Add the flour mixture alternatetly in thirds with the coffee, beating after each addition until smooth.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  • Bake for 1 1/2 hours or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Remove the pan to a wire rack and cool for 10-15 minutes.
  • Loosen the cake from the sides of the pan with a spatula and gently remove the cake to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • After it is completely cool, sprinkle the cake with the powdered sugar.

1 cup chopped nuts (I left them out) (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350.
  • Combine oil, eggs and milk in a medium bowl. Mix dry ingredients in large bowl.
  • Mix wet ingredients into the flour mixture until combined.
  • Spread batter into a sprayed 9 x 13 baking pan. Combine topping ingredients and sprinkle over batter.
  • Bake for 35 minutes. Let cool about 15 minutes before eating.
