- Hangi. Let’s start with the traditional Maori hangi! More than New Zealand cuisine, Hangi is Maori cuisine at its finest. This involves meat and vegetables slow-cooked in an underground oven.
- Crayfish. Another traditional New Zealand food is Crayfish! Crayfish, also known as lobster, is a Kiwi favourite mostly because it something many fishermen and divers pride on catching themselves.
- Kina. Ok, New Zealanders love their seafood so we’ll just hop straight onto another foodie delight from the ocean. Kina is the local name for a type of sea urchin with a hard spiky outer shell and thin fleshy (and edible) insides.
- Kiwi Burger. You’ll either think it’s weird or it’s genius, but it sure is New Zealand cuisine! What makes a “Kiwi burger” Kiwi is the fact it has beetroot and a fried egg along with your standard burger patties and whatever else between two burger buns.
- Jaffas. Another New Zealand famous food are Jaffas! Rolling onto the sweet stuff, Jaffas are a confectionery favourite among New Zealanders. So much so that they race them!
- Pavlova. Ask an Australian and they will swear that Oz invented the pavlova. Ask a Kiwi and they will tell you differently. Either way, pavlova is a much-loved dessert in New Zealand made with meringue, whipped cream and fruit.
- L&P. We’ll sneak a beverage on this list just because it’s very proudly Kiwi. L&P stands for “Lemon & Paeroa” named after the North Island town it was invented in.
- Whitebait Fritters. Don’t visit the West Coast of the South Island without trying whitebait fritters. It’s considered a sin in New Zealand! Whitebait is a collective term for immature fish, usually around one to two inches long.
- Manuka Honey. Last on our list of classic food in New Zealand, world-famous Manuka honey! Highly-sought on the international markets, manuka honey is acclaimed for its medicinal purposes.
- Kumara. Kumara isn’t just a sweet potato; it is an epic sweet potato. Kumara was brought to New Zealand by the early Maori settlers and still remain a favourite vegetable in New Zealand.

- Canterbury Lamb. The South Island provides the country’s most significant exports of lamb, beef, and venison. In fact, it is not uncommon to find NZ lamb served in the most famous restaurants in Europe and America.
- Kaimoana (Seafood) No list about “foods to try in NZ” would be complete without seafood! The most exciting thing about the seafood in New Zealand is that you can often collect it and prepare it yourself.
- The ‘Kiwi’ Burger. Burgers are found all around the world, though you’ll find there’s something different about a Kiwi burger that differentiates it from the rest.
- Hāngī. It should come as no surprise that this Māori traditional dish features on this list. This cooking method uses hot steam to cook root vegetables, pork, chicken, potatoes and beef.
- Kūmara. The New Zealand sweet potato (kūmara in Te Reo Māori), is one of the traditionally cooked foods you’ll find in a hāngī. However, different cooking methods have evolved the Kumara into a much-loved snack in NZ.
- Meat Pies. If there’s one easy, on-the-go lunch option that New Zealand is famous for, it is without a doubt our amazing meat pies! With buttery, flakey pastry and a wide range of flavourful fillings, our pies really are a winning lunch option for practically all palettes.
- Southland Cheese Rolls. A southern classic, cheese rolls are found in bakeries and cafes right around the South Island. You won’t find them anywhere else in New Zealand though!
- Sweetcorn Fritters. Though corn fritters originated in Native American communities, New Zealand has its own version of this versatile snack and boy are they delicious!
- Whitebait Fritters. A real New Zealand delicacy, whitebait fritters are made using fresh kaimoana (seafood) and generally sandwiched between fresh white bread.
- Marmite on Vogels. Vogels toast is a bit of a Kiwi institution – and when you add marmite and lashings of fresh New Zealand butter, it reaches the next level.

- Kiwifruit. It’s impossible to talk about the land of Kiwis and not mention the kiwifruit. The rest of the world simply knows them as kiwis. Here, you’ll get mocked horrendously for saying that.
- Ruby Kiwifruit. Even Kiwis don’t know about these. Red kiwifruit are red inside and have a berry-like sweetness to them. They’re delicious, but the bright red colour in a kiwifruit is so strange that it kind of put me off.
- Golden Kiwifruit. This is the best new fruit I found in New Zealand. Golden kiwifruit are slightly sweeter than the green ones. The flesh is a bit more yellow and it is less acidic.
- Kiwi Berries. That’s right: they even have kiwifruit in berry form in New Zealand! These grape-sized fruits taste exactly like a kiwifruit. They have no fur on the outside, but otherwise look just like a miniature kiwifruit.
- Feijoa. A green fruit that is shaped like an egg and tastes like green apples. Kiwis often use feijoas to make pies or tarts, as you would with any other apple.
- Kumara. A vegetable similar in taste and shape to a sweet potato. It comes in purple (less sweet), orange (mild) and white (sweeter). Kumara are a polynesian type of sweet potato from what I could find.
- Tamarillo. This egg-shaped, red fruit tastes tangy and sweet, like a kiwifruit or a tomato. Tamarillos have a lot of pulp inside, much like the seeds of a tomato.
- Meat Pies. What would the world be without meat pies? A place I wouldn’t want to live in, that’s for sure! Meat pies are HUGE in New Zealand (in popularity, not size).
- Sausage Sizzle. Aussies have shrimp on the barbie, well Kiwis have saussies (sausages). A sausage sizzle is a traditional beach meal in New Zealand. I know tons of people who do a sausage sizzle and a clam bake for their Christmas cookouts on the beach (because, yes, New Zealand living means beach Christmases – a clear pro of living in New Zealand).
- Lamb. New Zealand has more sheep than people, so of course it’s known for its lamb. As someone who detests lamb, I didn’t partake very often. I tried a lamb hangi and a bite of stewed lamb during my time here.
