MEXICAN HOT DOGS
If you've ever walked through the streets of Los Angeles late at night, you may have been lucky enough to happen upon a street vendor selling bacon-wrapped hot dogs piled high with caramelized onions, sautéed peppers, pico de gallo, avocado, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise. This version of Mexican hot dogs, also known as street dogs or Los Angeles hot dogs, is believed to be a riff on a similar recipe that originated in Sonora, Mexico. In Los Angeles, they're sometimes fried on a mobile D.I.Y. griddle made with a wheeled cart, a large sheet pan and a heat source underneath, but we don't recommend trying that at home. For this recipe, a standard sheet pan and an oven will do.

Steps:
- Heat oven to 400 degrees. Tightly wrap each hot dog with a strip of bacon until most of the hot dog is covered. Transfer hot dogs to an aluminum foil-lined baking sheet. If using jalapeños, place them skin-side down on a separate aluminum foil-lined baking sheet and lightly drizzle with oil. Roast jalapeños until skin starts to blister, about 25 minutes. Roast hot dogs until bacon is browned and starts to ripple, about 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Add the yellow onion and cook, stirring frequently, until it begins to brown and shrinks by half, about 10 minutes. Stir in bell pepper and the remaining 1 tablespoon oil; season to taste with salt. Remove from heat when onions are caramelized and peppers are soft, about 20 minutes.
- Make the pico de gallo with avocado: Combine tomatoes, avocado, red onion, cilantro and lime juice in a medium bowl. Season to taste with salt and set aside.
- Toast buns, if desired. Blot excess oil from the hot dogs with a paper towel and transfer to buns. Top with onions, peppers and pico de gallo. Drizzle with ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise. Finish with roasted jalapeños, if desired.
NEW YORK PUSHCART ONIONS (FOR HOT DOGS)
I am a Canadian who spent 6 winters in Florida, and while there I met a person from New York (Brian). I did the cooking for most parties at the park, including snacks for our golf group which met twice a week after golf. Brian told me about the Push Cart Onions and I tried them with the group. They loved them. You can play with this recipe to suit your taste. Add more or less sugar, maybe a little more hot sauce, etc.

NEW YORK STREET CART ONION SAUCE FOR HOT DOGS
This is an easy version of the traditional hot dog topping that's served up at New York City hot dog carts. These hot dogs (generally Sabrett's) are jokingly referred to as "dirty water dogs". While you can easily find jars of this onion sauce at supermarkets, it's still fun to make your own.

NEW YORK HOT DOG CART ONION SAUCE
Born in the Bronx, raised in Queens. My father worked for Pan Am in the day (data Control), drove a New York Cab at night, and on the weekends he owned a New York Hot Dog Cart. Before he passed away in February of 2004, he did give me the recipe to the Onion Sauce. When everybody else is saying to use pasta sauce, and this and that, the truth is there are only six ingredients. Bobby Flay is about the only one who got it close. In New York a true New York Hot Dog ordered from a cart is, Nathan Hot Dogs, Mustard, Onion Sauce, and topped with Sauerkraut. I wanted to write this recipe for a long time but after seeing so many Onion Sauce recipes, and hearing how so many people are from New York, it is time to post the original recipe.

Steps:
- In a small sauce pan place vegetable oil, and onions.
- Cook over medium heat; saute until onion is soft; don't burn it.
- Quickly add ketchup, water, stir.
- Stir for at least 20 minutes or until the water is reduced about 1/2.
- Note: I had to mention a measurement in order for this recipe to go through. The truth is to use a pinch of cinnamon and a pinch of salt.
- This is the true recipe for Onion Sauce for New York Hot dogs.
- When I use the sauerkraut I boil it with added water to make it softer.

Steps:
- First, make the onions. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a low-medium heat and cook the onions for 10-12 mins until golden and slightly charred in spots.
- Stir in the cinnamon, chilli powder, honey, mustard, ketchup, tomato purée, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, 2-3 tbsp water and a pinch of salt. Simmer for 1-2 mins until the onions are saucy, adding a splash more water if they seem dry. Taste and add a little more chilli powder, mustard or a pinch of sugar, if you like. Keep the onions warm if you're serving straightaway or cool and chill. Will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days. Reheat over a low heat before serving, adding a splash of water to loosen as needed.
- Light a barbecue and wait until the coals are ashen, set a gas barbecue to medium or heat a griddle pan over a medium heat. Alternatively, bring a pan of water to a simmer. Cook the frankfurters for 15 mins on the barbecue or in a griddle pan until charred, or for 8 mins in a pan of simmering water. If using a barbecue, warm the buns over the coals, if you like. Spoon a little sauerkraut into each bun, top with a frankfurter and spoon over the onions. Drizzle over some extra mustard and ketchup.

8 BEST NEW YORK STREET FOOD VENDORS FOR DELICIOUS, QUICK …
From timeout.com
Estimated Reading Time 5 mins
- The Kati Roll Company. Restaurants. Indian. Midtown East. price 1 of 4. Technically, The Kati Roll Company is a restaurant, but the Calcuttan casual fare served here certainly qualifies as street food because the interior is teeny tiny so most of the time you have no choice but to take away, and most importantly, kati rolls are the perfect on-the-go meal.
- Royal Grill Halal Food. Real New Yorkers know the best (only?) reason to go to Times Square is for Royal Grill: in a city chock full of seemingly similar halal carts, Royal Grill is the cream of the crop.
- Joe’s Steam Rice Roll. You can find rice rolls on dim sum menus and carts dotting Chinatown’s crowded streets. But Joe’s Steam Rice Roll sells our top cheong fun, the wide, translucent rice noodles filled with meat (pork, beef and shrimp are most common).
- Makina Ethiopian Food. Owner Eden Egziabher prepares dishes inspired by her Eritrean, Ethiopian and Italian heritage. Switch out your to-go salad for an equally healthful platter of squishy injera (sourdough-risen flatbread) that comes with a choice of veggies (we suggest the red-lentil stew and collard greens), protein (beef or chicken) and a side of rice.
- NY Dosas. Thiru Kumar, known as the Dosa Man, has amassed a loyal following since opening his spot in 2001. Every street-food fan (some of whom may also be penny-pinching NYU students) knows to beeline to his NY Dosas cart, parked on the southwest corner of Washington Square Park.
