6 FOODIE FINDS ALONG THE MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST | TRIP101
From trip101.com
- Jet Away Cafe. Let’s start our exploration of the Mississippi Gulf Coast eateries with one of the most unlikely - the small cafe of a regional airport.
- Two Casinos: Silver Slipper and Hollywood. Casinos and buffets go hand in hand, and the Jubilee Buffet at the Silver Slipper lives up to expectations for bountiful offerings.
- 200 North Beach. With a name and an address that match, 200 North Beach on the corner in Old Town Bay St. Louis is a great place for a fabulous dinner, a chance to mingle with like-minded people on the upstairs balcony or to celebrate a special occasion.
- Mockingbird Cafe. At Mockingbird Cafe, you will experience an intriguing mix of free-thinking individuals who come in for yoga classes, for an opportunity to peruse the work of local artists, for a cup of Coast Roast coffee or tea, for a homemade morning or afternoon baked treat, or for a light breakfast or lunch where the emphasis is on fresh.
- Cuz's Old Town Oyster Bar and Grill. Located directly across from the bay and in the heart of Old Town Bay St. Louis, Cuz’s Oyster Bar and Grill is a casual gathering place for locals and visitors providing all of the tastes most associated with the Gulf Coast, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast in particular.
- Jourdan River Steamer. Several things set Jourdan River Steamer in Kiln, Mississippi, apart from other seafood restaurants in the area. For one thing, the dining room and kitchen are situated high off the ground because of previous experience with storms and flooding.
6 DISHES YOU NEED TO EAT ON THE MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST
From tripsavvy.com
- Shrimp or Crawfish Étouffée. If you don't want to munch your shrimp as it falls from the inside of a Po'boy sandwich, perhaps savoring an Étouffée is more your style.
- Po'boy Sandwiches. The idea behind a po'boy sandwich is to heap a baguette (French bread) with a large helping of whatever is plentiful. So you might see turkey and dressing po'boys around Thanksgiving Day, crawfish po'boys, or maybe that local favorite, the shrimp po'boy.
- Fried Green Tomatoes. It doesn't take much imagination to deep-fry a breaded tomato slice. Some places, that's about all you'll find on your plate. But Mississippians have been known to raise this simple dish to a culinary art form.
- Crawfish Monica. As you wander the coast, you'll be invited to try crawfish in a host of varieties. A favorite along the Mississippi coast is Crawfish Monica, which pairs creamy pasta with crawfish and a Cajun-seasoned sauce.
- Jambalaya. Jambalaya has its origins along the coasts of France and Spain and is served along the Gulf in both Cajun and Creole varieties. Although there are subtle differences, many recipes include the so-called "Trinity" of celery, onion, and peppers.
- Mississippi Mud Pie. Perhaps it's the tempting alliteration between Mississippi and mud that produced this name. Don't try to make much sense of it. There are closely guarded mud pie recipes from Pascagoula to East St. Louis, but most of them bear some resemblance to a chocolate brownie with pecans, topped with chocolate icing and melted marshmallows.
8 FOODS MISSISSIPPI MADE FAMOUS - MATADOR NETWORK
From matadornetwork.com
- Blue Crab. The sweet meat of blue crabs is to Mississippi what bacon is to Texas — the perfect topping that makes any protein even better. Most restaurants no longer have West Indies Salad because jumbo lump is so expensive and difficult to come by.
- Po’Boys. Louisiana claims to have invented the po’boy–French bread piled high with protein, lettuce and tomato–but Mississippi took it to the next level by making deep-fried seafood the protein of choice.
- Soul Food. Fried chicken, fried okra, biscuits and gravy, collard greens, catfish and cornbread are mainstays of Mississippi cuisine. The juicy, crispy fried chicken of Two Sisters Kitchen was featured on Man v. Food Nation, and Cajun’s Fabulous Fried Chicken in Gulfport has an all-you-can-eat buffet of the stuff.
- Barbecue. Pulled pork, ribs and BBQ chicken at Little Dooey are go-to dishes for country music legends like Ricky Van Shelton and Alabama. Lines start before opening at Ocean Springs’ famous Shed Barbecue and Blues Joint.
- Gulf Shrimp. Bubba in Forrest Gump went on and on about what you could make with shrimp. Brown, white and pink species caught in the gulf waters are boiled, fried, sautéed, grilled, stuffed and gratinated in restaurants and home kitchens across the state.
- Comeback Sauce. Remoulade and Thousand Island got nothin’ on comeback sauce. It’s a versatile mayonnaise-based, spicy dipping sauce for fried food, a condiment on sandwiches and a dressing on salads that ensures repeat customers.
- Gulf Oysters. Coastal oysters are huge and flavorful, with shells reaching eight inches in diameter. Like shrimp, they are on the menu of all eateries claiming to specialize in seafood.
- Mississippi Mud Pie. This indulgence looks like muddy Mississippi River tributaries after a rainstorm but tastes like chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate.
