  • Baleadas. Baleadas are among the most popular Honduran foods to date. You’ll find them in almost every nook and cranny of the country’s north coast. Typically sold in the streets, baleadas will enchant you with their aromatic and mouthwatering fillings.
  • Honduran Fried Plantains. Fried plantains are a wildly popular side dish in Honduras. After all, the country is one of the top exporters of bananas in the world.
  • Honduran Bean Tostadas. Honduran bean tostadas are quite similar to baleadas. The key difference is that you’ll use fried corn tortillas for this recipe.
  • Macheteadas. Macheteadas are a traditional sweet snack from Honduras. If you have some leftover baleada dough, it’s perfect for making some macheteadas or sweet fried dough.
  • Horchata. Horchata is a sweet rice-milk drink popular in Latin countries, particularly in Mexico. Of course, Honduran horchata isn’t one to dismiss. This is THE drink that complements almost any Honduran dish!
  • Honduran Red Beans and Rice. Red beans are a great source of vitamins and dietary fiber, which helps with digestion. Reignite your love for this nutrient-dense ingredient using this recipe.
  • Pan De Coco. You don’t need eggs or any other dairy products to make these sweet, light, and fluffy buns. Using coconut milk, active dry yeast, and other pantry staples, you’ll have some tasty coconut bread that’s perfect for various dishes.
  • Honduran Quesadillas. There are two kinds of quesadillas available in Honduras. The first one refers to grilled tortillas with meat and cheese filling.
  • Chimol. Chimol is the Hondurans’ version of pico de gallo, a refreshing salsa that’s great for chips and grilled meats. If you don’t like spicy foods, Honduran pico de gallo is for you.
  • Honduran Enchiladas. One of my all-time favorite Honduran foods is enchiladas. They’re loaded with flavors from meat, eggs, veggies, and cheese. All of my favorites are wrapped up in a crispy corn tortilla with a drizzle of warm tomato sauce.

THE 25 MOST POPULAR HONDURAN FOODS - CHEF'S PENCIL

From chefspencil.com
  • Baleadas. Baleadas is a dish originally from the North Coast, but it is one of the meals that never goes missing in the daily life of every Honduran. It consists of a wheat flour tortilla very similar to the Italian piadinas or the kebab wrap.
  • Traditional Honduran Breakfast. The Honduran traditional breakfast can be eaten either for breakfast or for dinner. It consists of a plate of the most typical ingredients of the region: fried beans, fried plantains, corn tortillas, Latin cheese, creamy butter, and eggs.
  • Catrachas. One of the most typical and easy to make, catrachas consists of a fried corn tortilla base, refried beans, and a topping of grated cheese.
  • Carne Asada. Every country has its own particular way of preparing barbacoa or carne asada, and Honduras is no exception. This traditional meal that is shared with the family on weekends is characterized by its side dishes: rice, beans, corn tortillas, grilled plantain, and dry cheese.
  • Honduran Enchiladas. The name enchilada may sound a little familiar since there is a dish with the same name in Mexico, but be careful not to confuse them since their preparation and ingredients are completely different.
  • Honduran Pupusas. Of Salvadoran origin but with a very different flavor, Honduran pupusas are a favorite of foreigners and locals alike. They are like arepas stuffed with cheese, but their preparation is different, since the cheese, chicharrón or bean filling is placed inside the raw corn dough, then flattened to give it a fatter tortilla shape.
  • Honduran Chinese Rice. Chinese rice? Yes! As strange as it may seem, the Chinese rice that you find in Honduras has only the name Chinese. In essence, it is a bowl of fried rice with pieces of meat, chicken, and shrimp, but in fact, it is more than that.
  • Snail soup. Snail soup is one of the must-try dishes if you visit the Honduran coast. Besides having a spectacular flavor, it also has its own song: The broth of this magnificent soup is made with coconut milk and seafood broth, and inside is a variety of vegetables such as plantain and yucca.
  • Bean Soup. It is already clear that Hondurans are obsessed with beans, so much so that they have their own soup. It is a bean-based broth with hard boiled egg and vegetables, accompanied, like any soup, with white rice and corn tortillas.
  • Olancho Tapado Soup. This is the favorite soup to have on a Sunday while watching a soccer league game. It is a meat soup containing pork, chorizo, and beef.
