1 3/4 cups maple syrup (do not use imitation syrup)
1 1/4 cups water
1 1/2 cups flour
4 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, frozen
3/4 cup milk

Steps:

  • Bring syrup and water to a boil in a 6 qt Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  • While the syrup/water is rising to a boil, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Set aside.
  • Grate butter on large holes of a box grater into flour and toss to coat. Add milk and stir with a fork until dough forms.
  • When syrup mixture reaches a boil, use a spoon to drop large clumps of dough into syrup.
  • Cover pot and simmer until dumplings are cooked through (10-15 minutes). Spoon dumplings and sauce into 6 bowls and serve.

A recipe I've logged down and not yet tried. Looks good though, and would be great after an Asian themed party or just if you are looking for a sweet treat which is a little different.

oil
75 g sugar
100 g red bean paste (plain)
50 g desiccated coconut
4 egg whites
1 tablespoon plain flour
3 tablespoons cornflour
icing sugar

Steps:

  • Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok and add the sugar, coconut and bean paste. Fry for 4 minutes until the sugar has melted and the paste has a smooth texture. Continue to fry for a couple more minutes then leave aside to cool.
  • In another bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff and add to the sieved plain flour and cornflour until a smooth batter is formed. Beat this mixture.
  • Clean the wok and heat enough oil to fry the dumplings. With the bean paste mixture, you can make approx 10-12 even-sized balls. Dip these into the batter evenly and deep fry in the wok for 3-4 minutes until golden and crisp. Drain on kitchen paper as you fry more.
  • Dust with icing sugar before serving, or try using your favourite syrup. (I'm gunna try with chocolate when I get the chance!).

1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups flour
1/4 cup shortening
1 cup milk
1 1/2 cups maple syrup
1 cup water

Steps:

  • Preparation of the grandfathers : Mix sugar, baking powder, salt and flour. Incorporate shortening. Add milk and mix until the dough is homogeneous.
  • Syrup preparation : In a big casserole, bring to boil the maple syrup and water. With an ice cream spoon, do balls with the dough and put in the casserole. Cover and let simmer for 15 minutes but don't remove the cover during the cooking time.

1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup butter
3/4 cup milk

Steps:

  • Mix water and maple syrup in a saucepan. Bring to boil and let simmer at a very low heat. Meanwhile, prepare the dough:.
  • Dough: In a bowl, put flour, baking powder and salt. Add butter and rub with your hands.
  • Add the milk and stir.
  • With a spoon, let drop dough by spoonful directly in the boiling syrup.
  • Cover and let simmer at very low heat for 15 minutes (Do not remove the cover in the 15 minutes).
