MAPLE TAFFY ON SNOW OR CRUSHED ICE

Maple Taffy on Snow or Crushed Ice image

For those of us who dont currently have snow, we will either have to wait or substitute crushed ice for this recipes. Sounds like something that could be really yummy and fun for the kids to "help" out with, although they should be supervised carefully with the hot liquid.

Provided by LAURIE

Categories     Dessert

Time 40m

Yield 2 pans

Number Of Ingredients 3

3 1/2 quarts crushed ice (or snow)
2 cups pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon butter

Steps:

  • Pack clean fresh snow into 2 13x9 pans until dense and smooth on top.
  • Keep snow or crushed ice outside or in freezer until ready to use.
  • Add maple syrup & butter to saucepan.
  • Boil uncovered on medium high heat until the syrup reaches 250 - 260 degrees.
  • Do not stir.
  • Remove from heat immediately and pour small strips of hot syrup on snow until pot is empty.
  • A second person (wearing winter gloves) should roll each hot strip onto a popsicle stick or fork and leave on the snow to cool.
  • Eat when cool.
  • The syrup is extremely hot - it can cause severe burns.
  • Store uneaten sticks on cookie sheets lined with waxed paper in the deep freeze.
  • They will keep for several weeks.

MAPLE SNOW

Maple Snow image

This may seem silly to post this recipe (if you can call it a recipe), but this treat is one of my favorite winter memories as a kid. You can make this with your kids and if they like maple syrup, they'll love this!

Provided by Sarah in New York

Categories     Frozen Desserts

Time 5m

Yield 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 2

3 cups snow (yes actual snow)
1/2 cup maple syrup (or as much as you want!)

Steps:

  • Let your kids go outside and fill a bowl with snow (Preferably clean snow) :).
  • Drizzle maple syrup over the snow and give them a spoon. It's a really yummy treat that I'm sure they won't forget. I'm all grown up and will never forget "Maple Snow"!

  • Combine maple syrup and ginger in a small saucepan over high. Bring mixture to a boil, stirring often, until a candy thermometer registers 240°F (soft ball stage), about 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Place prepared baking sheet of snow from freezer to the counter. Pour hot syrup mixture into 6long strips over the snow. Quickly sprinkle a bit of salt over each syrup strip. Working quickly, use a craft stick to press gently on 1 end of each strip; roll slightly hardened maple candy mixture onto the stick, gently forming into a candy pop at the end of each stick.

  • Have a clean swath of fresh packed snow, a handful of popsicle sticks, and a ladle at the ready.
  • Pour the maple syrup into a heavy-bottomed, high-sided 2-quart saucepan. Make sure your pot is larger than you think you'll need, because the maple syrup will start to bubble and foam ferociously as it heats, and you don't want it to boil over.
  • Clip a candy thermometer to the side of the pan and heat the syrup over medium heat until it reaches 245 degrees—firm-ball stage in candy-making parlance.
  • Remove the candy thermometer and immediately take the syrup out to the snow. The syrup will rise a few more degrees in temperature even after it's off the stove.
