  • Shrimp. Packaged, plain, frozen shrimp commonly contains added salt for flavor, as well as sodium-rich preservatives. For example, sodium tripolyphosphate is commonly added to help minimize moisture loss during thawing (6).
  • Soup. Canned, packaged, and restaurant-prepared soups often pack a lot of sodium, though you can find reduced-sodium options for some canned varieties.
  • Ham. Ham is high in sodium because salt is used to cure and flavor the meat. A 3-ounce (85-gram) serving of roasted ham averages 1,117 mg of sodium, or 48% of the RDI (10).
  • Instant pudding. Pudding doesn’t taste salty, but there’s plenty of sodium hiding in instant pudding mix. This sodium is from salt and sodium-containing additives — disodium phosphate and tetrasodium pyrophosphate — used to help thicken instant pudding.
  • Cottage cheese. Cottage cheese is a good source of calcium and an excellent source of protein, but it’s also relatively high in salt. A 1/2-cup (113-gram) serving of cottage cheese averages 350 mg of sodium, or 15% of the RDI (13).
  • Vegetable juice. Drinking vegetable juice is a simple way to get your veggies, but if you don’t read nutrition labels, you could be drinking a lot of sodium, too.
  • Salad dressing. Some of the sodium in salad dressing comes from salt. Additionally, some brands add sodium-containing flavor additives, such as MSG and its cousins, disodium inosinate and disodium guanylate.
  • Pizza. Pizza and other multi-ingredient dishes account for almost half of the sodium Americans consume. Many of the ingredients, such as cheese, sauce, dough, and processed meat, contain significant amounts of sodium, which add up quickly when they’re combined (4).
  • Sandwiches. Sandwiches are another one of the multi-ingredient dishes that account for almost half of the sodium Americans consume. The bread, processed meat, cheese, and condiments often used to make sandwiches all contribute a significant amount of sodium (4).
  • Broths and stocks. Packaged broths and stocks, which are used as the base for soups and stews or to flavor meat and vegetable dishes, are notoriously high in salt.

TOP 10 LOW SODIUM FOODS LIST FOR HOW TO START A HEART ...

  • Fruit. If you’re looking for something to satisfy your sweet tooth that’s still a healthy option, look no further than fruit. They’re some of nature’s most delicious snacks, and fruits are full of health benefits that will keep you feeling energized and refreshed.
  • Vegetables. It may seem obvious to include vegetables on a list of healthy foods, but it bears repeating. Vegetables contain minimal amounts of sodium and, like fruit, they are absolutely loaded with potential health benefits.
  • Unsalted Nuts. Many different kinds of nuts have different kinds of benefits for your health. For example, peanuts are a great source of protein, which can provide energy to your body.
  • Quinoa. This food has become increasingly popular in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. Quinoa is a grain that is loaded with protein, which makes it a necessary staple in many vegetarian dishes and meal plans.
  • Eggs. There was a time when people considered eggs to be one of the more unhealthy foods, but recent research has shown they’re not as bad as people once feared.
  • Goat Cheese. Like eggs, dairy often gets a bad rap. And it’s true that you should avoid overloading on dairy. But if you enjoy it in moderation, goat cheese is actually one of the more healthy options.
  • Salmon. It’s no secret that salmon is good for you. It routinely appears on lists of healthiest foods, and there are a lot of good reasons for that. For one, salmon is full of omega-3 fatty acids, the reason why many people take krill oil supplements.
  • Yogurt. If you want to add a little extra substance to your fruit, try mixing it into a serving of yogurt. Yogurt is another popular low-sodium food, and it has a variety of uses.

  • Bread. Bread can pack in around 230 milligrams per slice, and that's before you make a sandwich with two slices and fill it with meat and condiments. For example, Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Hearty White Bread contains 230 milligrams per slice — that's 10 percent of your Daily Value (DV) of sodium.
  • Pizza. Frozen pizza, while convenient, is often extremely high in sodium. Just one serving — that's one slice! — of DiGiorno Rising Crust Pepperoni Pizza has 760 milligrams or about a third of your DV.
  • Cold Cuts and Cured Meats. Sodium is used to preserve cold cuts and cured meats, and once you choose a flavored package (think Mexican-style or honey-roasted), you'll probably get even more sodium in your deli meat.
  • Soups. Like cured meats and cold cuts, canned soups are made with high amounts of sodium for preservation purposes. One single can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup contains not only nostalgic memories of snow days, but also 2.5 servings.
  • Burritos and Tacos. Cooking at home is a good way to cut back on sodium, but it's also important to choose better-for-you ingredients. Homemade tacos, for example, can be a healthy dinner if you use reduced-salt seasoning — or even better, if you use your own spices.
  • Savory Snacks. If you're craving something salty, you're likely to reach for one of these sodium-rich snacks: chips, popcorn, pretzels, snack mixes and crackers.
  • Cheese. The more processed your cheese is, the more sodium it can contain. A single slice of Kraft American Singles contains 220 milligrams — 9 percent of your DV — and you likely won't eat just one slice.
  • Omelets. On their own, eggs aren't very high in sodium — one egg packs in about 70 milligrams of naturally occurring sodium. But when you start adding cheese, salt and bacon to your scrambled eggs and omelets, sodium levels spike pretty quickly.

  • Track Your Intake. Start by tracking your current sodium intake by using a nutrition tracking app. This is an easy way to understand where the majority of your dietary sodium is coming from, where to start making healthy swaps, and to ensure you are staying on top of the recommended guidelines and sticking to a low salt diet overall.
  • Plan Your Meals. Planning some or all of your meals in advance is another great way to take control of your nutrition - especially since you know exactly what you’re getting each day.
  • Read Food Labels. If eating a packaged food item, always check the nutrition facts label to check the sodium levels in your food choices. As a general rule of thumb, anything with lower than 5% of the daily value for sodium is considered “low”, and anything with more than 20% is “high” (7).
  • Avoid Salt While Eating Out, Or Opt to Cook at Home More. When eating at a restaurant or grabbing anything prepared outside of your home, ask your server to skip the salt if possible.
  • Use Alternative Seasonigs. It is entirely possible to add a ton of flavor to your food without reaching for the salt every time. Utlizing herbs, spices, and seasonings such as vinegar is the perfect way to skip the salt and pack the flavor.
