THE BEST HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE

The Best Homemade Applesauce image

After tasting the pure apple flavor of this homemade sauce, you just might never go back to the store-bought kind. Supermarket applesauce can be loaded with added sweeteners and flavorings. We use only a little sugar, plus lemon juice, salt and cinnamon, providing a balanced flavor and the perfect amount of sweetness.

Categories     condiment

Time 1h35m

Yield about 5 cups

Number Of Ingredients 5

4 pounds assorted apples, such as Golden Delicious, Gala, Honeycrisp or McIntosh (about 8), peeled, cored and chopped
1/4 cup sugar
Kosher salt
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Combine the apples, sugar, 1 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large pot. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook until the apples are very soft, 18 to 20 minutes.
  • Stir in the lemon juice and cinnamon. Let cool for 5 minutes or so, then transfer the apple mixture to a blender, filling no more than halfway. Remove the center cap from the lid and place it on the blender. Cover the lid with a folded kitchen towel to catch splatters and pulse until smooth. Alternatively, puree in the pan with an immersion blender.
  • Transfer the applesauce to a bowl and refrigerate until cool, about 1 hour. Store leftover applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

apples

Steps:

  • 1. Wash apples. Do NOT peel.
  • 2. Pour a small amount of water or apple juice into a large, thick-bottomed, nonreactive pot or Dutch oven. You want just enough water or juice to barely cover the bottom of the pot. Cover pot and turn heat to low.
  • 3. Cut the apple off the core and add to pot.
  • You can use a sharp knife and a cutting board for this or you can use an apple slicer.
  • (Replace lid on pot after each addition.)
  • 4. After all your apples are in the pot, turn the heat to medium-high and cook apples (covered) until soft - about 10 to 20 minutes depending on how many apples you have in the pot and what type of apples you use.
  • Stir often to prevent apples from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  • 5. Once apples are soft, transfer to blender (3 to 4 cups at a time) and blend on high speed until very, very smooth.

HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE

Homemade Applesauce image

Learn how to make delicious homemade applesauce! This easy applesauce recipe can be chunky or smooth. It's also naturally sweetened with maple syrup or honey, to taste. Recipe yields about 4 cups.

Provided by Cookie and Kate

Categories     Side

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 1/2 pounds Gala apples (or any other variety of sweet red apple, about 4 medium)
1 1/2 pounds Granny Smith apples (or Golden Delicious, about 4 medium)
1/3 cup water
2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey, more to taste
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar or 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Steps:

  • Peel, core and chop the apples into 2″ chunks. In a medium Dutch oven or large stainless steel saucepan, combine the apple chunks, water, maple syrup and cinnamon. Cover and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Continue simmering, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender and falling apart, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Remove the pot from the heat. For chunky applesauce, use a potato masher or the back of a sturdy spatula or wooden spoon to break it up to your desired consistency. For smooth applesauce, blend it in your food processor.
  • Stir in the vinegar. Adjust to taste as necessary-for sweeter applesauce, stir in more maple syrup (I usually add 2 tablespoons); for more spice, add more cinnamon; for more complexity, add another teaspoon of vinegar.
  • Serve warm or chilled; let it cool to room temperature before covering leftover applesauce and storing it in the fridge. Leftover applesauce will keep well in the refrigerator for about 1 week, or for months in the freezer.
