FLAVORED VODKAS
There are three cardinal rules of drinking in Russia. The first is that you NEVER drink alone. To sit by yourself in front of an open bottle is considered abnormal and antisocial. Even the self professed drunkard abides by this rule, coming together as a small group (na troikh - for three) and chipping in for half a liter and some sausage or a bite of herring. The second cardinal rule of Russian drinking is to NEVER drink without eating something immediately after. The zakuska or "little bite" takes on a literal meaning. The "little bite" should be salty (to incourage more drinking!) such as pickles, olives, or herring. The third rule is to NEVER sip your vodka, and NEVER add ice or tonic. Although you can purchase commercial flavored vodkas, it's more fun to make your own, which you can do so in just a few minutes. I prefer to use a real Russian vodka, such as Stolichnaya. In a pinch I will use Absolut. Make at least two or three flavors and serve in cut crystal or glass decanters. A 750 ml bottle of vodka makes about 16 1 1/2 ounce drinks.

INFUSED VODKAS
Infusing vodka is as easy as adding ingredients to the bottle and letting it stand. Make sure to store the vodka in a cool, dark place, such as a kitchen cabinet.

Steps:
- Wash and dry the lemon, lime, and orange. Using a zester or a strong vegetable peeler, peel the skin of each citrus fruit to create narrow ribbons.;
- When handling peppers, it's best to use rubber gloves; some varieties can sting or even burn the skin. Wash and dry the peppers and slit them lengthwise into slivers. For stronger flavor, leave the seeds intact. For milder flavor, remove. Avoid getting the juice near eyes.
- For Both Recipes: Clean bottle in warm sudsy water. Rinse and dry. Gently place the citrus peels or peppers into the gift bottle, pour in the vodka, and cover the top of the bottle. (Do not seal at this point) Place the bottle in the refrigerator and let the ingredients steep for at least 3 hours - 2 days is better. Before giving, top off the bottle with additional vodka. (The infusion ingredients will soak up some of the vodka.) Seal the bottle with a cork or glass bottle stopper and seal with sealing wax. Tie a thin metal wire or fabric ribbon around the top of the neck, if so desired.

- Strawberry Vodka. Capture the essence of sweet strawberries in a delicious vodka. This infusion should take a little over a week and it's perfect for a variety of cocktails like the sparkling strawberry rosé recipe, pairing the vodka with pear, basil, and sparkling wine.
- Watermelon Vodka. Perfect for summer, watermelon vodka is too much fun. Use it to accent cocktails like the summertime fruit punch lemonade. If you want something a little more dynamic for your barbecue, try a drunken watermelon.
- Pear Vodka. While you can mix up a peartini with store-bought pear vodka, this infusion is easy to do at home. You can use any variety of pears and the finished flavor works really well with other autumn and early winter flavors.
- Lemon Vodka. Lemon vodkas are not very common. When you have a cocktail that calls for it, it may be easier to make it yourself. A recipe like the lavender lemon drop martini is a perfect use for it.
- Apple-Pear-Cinnamon Vodka. This is a fantastic infusion for autumn and can be used in many of your favorite vodka cocktails. It was created for the autumn spiced tonic recipe though you'll quickly find other uses for it as well.
- Spiced Pumpkin Vodka. When those autumn cravings for all things pumpkin set it, consider making your own pumpkin vodka. It's a great use for the meat after carving the year's jack-o-lanterns.
- Tomato Vodka. A unique ingredient, tomato vodka is rather interesting. While one popular vodka brand once made it, it is no longer available. However, it did inspire a DIY version, and you can use that to taste the tempting tomojito.
- Cucumber Vodka. Cucumber vodka is another flavor you might want to take on yourself because it can be hard to find. It's one of the easiest infusions due to the nature of this garden staple and can be ready in just a few days.
- Kumquat Vodka. Not only do you get kumquat-flavored vodka with this infusion, you also get drunken kumquats to eat! This is a fun one to ease the transition from winter to spring and kumquat pairs perfectly with berries.
- Bacon Vodka. Bacon vodka is a thing and it can make some fun cocktails. It's not a true infusion, but more of a bacon fat-washed vodka instead. It is a little more involved and the bacon me angry cocktail proves that your efforts were not wasted.
11 FOODS YOU SHOULD BE INFUSING WITH ALCOHOL
From spoonuniversity.com

- Absinthe Cones. Take an absinthe shot and you will probably feel as though there are holes being burned in your throat. Take a few too many and you will literally burn to the ground.
- Drunken Donuts. They say "American Runs On Dunkin'" but I personally believe that America would run a little faster on Drunken'. Hence, drunken donuts aka your new favorite breakfast food.
- Vodka Pizza. Say goodbye to the days of ordering pizza after a long night out while sobering up and hello to pizza at the pregame. With vodka-infused pizza you get the best of both worlds all in one slice- heavenly.
- Fireball Cupcakes. That's right—now you can have your cake and drink it too. With the perfect amount of cinnamony booze and fluffy cake, you can now tastefully relive your high school glory days (aka chugging fireball in your friend's basement—don't lie, we all know you did).
- Boozy Milkshakes. Whether you're a bourbon fan, a whiskey fanatic, a vodka fiend, or a rum aficionado, alcohol-infused milkshakes are right for you. Unless of course you hate ice cream, in which case you probably would have stopped reading after #1 and not have even gotten this far.
- Tequila-Spiked Salsa. When chips and salsa are set out at a Mexican restaurant, there's nothing stopping you from eating ten times as much as you should.
- Piña Colada Popsicles. If you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain (bet you've never seen that as an Instagram caption before...) or if you just like piña coladas but NOT getting caught in the rain, you will LOVE piña colada popsicles.
- Adult Caramel Apples. How much more enjoyable would the classic family fall festivity of apple picking be if you were blackout? Probably a lot more. How do you accomplish this, you ask?
- Beer Cheese Dip. They say that one can of beer is equivalent to eating seven slices of bread... talk about healthy. Honestly though, if you're already in that deep, you might as well ball out and make it into a beer-infused cheese.
- Liquor-Filled Chocolates. You've most likely heard the saying "All you need is love — but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt" from the wise Charles M. Schulz.

- Pina Colada Popsicles. Take a trip to the tropics with a healthified version of the tasty island drink! Make Pina Colada popsicles by blending pineapple, coconut milk, coconut water and rum.
- Boozy Melon Salad. Watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew are all perfect fruits to infuse alcohol into. These juicy melons can be scooped out using an ice cream scoop and soaked in triple sec, fruit flavored vodka, and a touch of pineapple juice.
- Beer Braised Chicken. The Eat This, Not That! team was recently dazzled by how creatively alcohol can be used when we were visited by Cody Goldstein, founder of Muddling Memories, a cocktail and bar consulting firm.
- Prosecco Ice Cube Fruit Water. There's nothing better than gulping back an ice cold glass of water on a hot day. Well, there may be an exception; how about an ice cold fruit water with prosecco ice cubes?
- Tequila Lime Shrimp. Use tequila and lime to bring out a bold flavor in a shrimp dish. Shrimp is an awesome protein that is a definite go-to for anyone looking to lose weight.
- Whiskey Marinade. Spice up your life and go for a whiskey marinade when you grill chicken, tofu or veggies! For the marinade, combine whiskey, honey, soy sauce, ginger, sesame oil, crushed red pepper, lime juice, and garlic.
- Mezcal Gazpacho Soup. Here's another delicious idea from Goldstein! He likes to combine 2 ounces of Creyente Joven Mezcal in the blender with tomatoes and herbs to get a soup with a great smokey flavor.
- Tipsy Mojito Icey. Transform the classic cocktail into a refreshing, waist-whittling dessert! Combine honey, lime juice, lime zest, mint, white rum, and water, and then freeze.
- Tequila Spiked Salsa. The agavins (a natural sugar) found in Mexican tequila has been shown to help lower glucose levels and make you feel fuller than when consuming artificial sugar.
- Jello Shot Oranges. Instead of making jello shots with those packages of flavored jello that are filled with artificial sweeteners, make your own at home using unflavored gelatin powder and fresh oranges.
