- Find the right sized pots. Once you’ve bought your chosen tomato variety at your local garden center, you’ll need to find large pots to plant in. The bigger the better when it comes to growing tomatoes as this will be easier to look after the plants, and have a healthy harvest.
- Use good quality potting soil. Next, fill the pot with a good quality, high-nutrient potting soil or compost to about 1 inch below the rim. If you use ordinary garden soil, this will be too heavy for your pots and will compact.
- Plant tomato seedling deep in the soil. Now it’s time to get planting! A general rule of thumb when planting a tomato seedling, is to first remove the bottom sets of leaves.
- Add supports. Next, add support to keep your tomatoes well centered and in place to grow vertically. First, place a long stake right next to the stem. It should go to the bottom of the pot and stick up out of the soil.
- Place in a sunny spot. Tomato plants thrive in sunny locations, and warm temperatures. Ideally, they need between 6-8 hours of sunlight. Place tomato plants in sunny spots, and if they’re not getting enough sun during the day, move the pots around to a location that does.
- Water the soil well. Water the soil completely with a watering can. Generally, soil in pots can dry out quickly, so ensure the soil is watered every morning to provide daily moisture.
- Feed your tomatoes regularly. Finally, feed your tomato plant every two weeks with a tomato-specific fertilizer or an all-purpose, slow release feed. This will provide all the essential nutrients it will need to grow such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

- Don't Crowd Tomato Seedlings. If you are starting tomatoes from seed, give the seedlings plenty of room to branch out. Yes, that means thinning the seedlings to one strong plant per cell or small pot.
- Provide Lots of Light. Tomato seedlings need strong, direct light. Days are short during winter, so even placing them near a sunny window may not provide them with sufficient natural light.
- Turn a Fan On. Tomato plants need to move and sway in the breeze to develop strong stems. That happens naturally outdoors, but if you start your seedlings inside, you need to provide some type of air circulation.
- Preheat the Garden Soil. Tomatoes love heat. They won't really start to grow until both the soil and air temperatures remain warm. You can speed things up in the soil by covering the planting area with black or red plastic a couple of weeks before you intend to plant.
- Bury the Stems. Plant your tomato plants deeper than they come in the pot, all the way up to the top few leaves. When planted this way, tomatoes are able to develop roots all along their stems.
- Mulch Tomatoes After the Soil Has Warmed. If you are not going to leave plastic on the soil, hold off on putting down mulch until after the ground has had a chance to warm up.
- Remove the Bottom Leaves. After your tomato plants reach about 2 to 3 feet tall, remove the leaves from the bottom foot of the stem. These are the oldest leaves, and they are usually the first leaves to develop fungus problems.
- Pinch and Prune for More Tomatoes. Pinch and remove suckers that develop in the crotch joint of two branches. They won’t bear fruit and will take energy away from the rest of the plant.
- Water Regularly. Water deeply and regularly while the fruits are developing. Irregular watering—missing a week and trying to make up for it—leads to blossom end rot (a calcium deficiency) and cracking and splitting.
- Getting Your Tomato Plants to Set Tomatoes. Tomatoes' ripening is pretty much at the mercy of the weather, but sometimes we can help things along. Pinching off the tips of the main stems in early summer will encourage indeterminate tomatoes (those with fruit available continuously) to start putting their energy into flowering.
