HOW TO PLANT A SPROUTED ONION - MIGHTY MRS | SUPER EASY RECIPES
From mightymrs.com
- First, you need to peel the onion, layer by layer, down to the center. Chances are some of the outer layers will be soft and maybe starting to rot if your onion has started sprouting.
- Once you get to the center of your onion, then you want to carefully peel away the additional layers until you start to revel separate plants! Usually each sprouted onion will contain three separate plants.
- Separate each onion plant by carefully cutting apart at the root with a serrated kitchen knife.
- Now it's time to plant your onion sprouts. Your onion sprouts will survive for up to 3 weeks before you need to plant them. You do not need to store them in water or soak them before planting.
- Continue to water and weed around your onion plants. Onion plants prefer to be watered in cycles rather than every day. So you can water them about once a week unless the soil and plants start to visibly look too dry.
- Harvest your onions. If your onion does not flower then you can let it grow up until the first frost.* Harvest by pulling the onion out of the ground and then brushing them to remove dirt.
- Cure your onions for storage. You do not need to cure onions. You can eat onions right out of the ground. However, if you plan to store them, then you'll want to cure them first.

- Slice the Onion. Remove the center sprout of the onion by carefully cutting it lengthwise. Avoid cutting through the root. You can peel them off using your hands, or you can use a knife to cut the onion's layers from the sprouts.
- Separate the Sprouts. You'll probably notice a few sprouts developing in the middle of the onion bulb. Separate them carefully using your fingers.
- Put the Sprouts in Water. Prepare a container large enough to accommodate the onion sprouts. Fill it with water until just before submerging the roots in the water to keep any larvae in check.
- Plant Your Sprouted Onion. Have a separate hole for each sprout. Put each sprout at least 4 inches apart for adequate space. You can also separate them by placing them in a pot of soil.
- Watering Your Plant. The trick is to keep the soil moist without causing it to become soggy. You can do this by watering your onion once every day and completely letting the water drain out before adding more.
- Fertilizing After Planting. You can use a complete fertilizer for vegetables once your onion starts growing. You'll notice a good number of leaves growing on the sprouted onion.
- Harvest Onions. After 60 days, you should begin to prepare for the harvest. A bulb is ready for harvest if you see flower stalks and head starts appearing.
