  • Start with clean joints. Vacuum the grout lines, then scrape any protruding grout using a stiff putty knife and vacuum again. Don’t scrape too hard or you may chip the tile glazing.
  • Apply tape to trim tiles. For easier cleanup, tape off painted walls to protect them from grout. Also tape off any trim or inset tiles that feature imprinted patterns with crevices.
  • Mix the grout until it’s powder-free. Mix the grout with a margin trowel until all the powder is dissolved. Roll the bucket frequently while mixing. Scrape the bottom to make sure all the grout is mixed.
  • Let the grout “slake” When your grout has reached peanut butter status, stop! Go and make a sandwich, take out the trash, whatever. Let the grout slake (rest) for about 10 minutes.
  • Load the grout float. Tip the bucket toward you (like you did when mixing) and “drag” some grout with your float up the side of the bucket toward you to start your tile project.
  • Load the joints. Apply the grout diagonally across the tile joints to squish the grout into the joints. Use whichever side or corner of the float is necessary to fully compress grout into the entire joint.
  • Clean off excess grout. Remove the bulk of the grout by wiping in a serpentine motion. This helps evenly distribute the grout and prevents the grout float edge from digging into grout lines.
  • Sponge the surface. Once the grout has started to harden (20 to 30 minutes), begin sponging. Don’t use just any sponge, especially one from the kitchen; choose a “hydrophilic” sponge.
  • Tool the grout lines. When the surface has been cleaned, begin ‘tooling’ (smoothing and leveling) the grout lines with the sponge. Hold the sponge in your palm and, gently pressing down with your index finger, run the sponge over any grout joints that look too high or uneven.
  • Towel off the haze. After all the joints have been dressed, step away for about a half hour to let the surface dry and form a haze. Then wipe away the haze with a towel.

THE BASICS OF APPLYING GROUT TO FLOORS

From blog.onfloor.com
  • Mix the grout. The grout will have instructions on the package regarding the ratio of grout mix to water. Put the grout in a large bucket. Start by adding in 3/4 of the recommended water.
  • Apply the grout to a small area. Start in the furthest corner and work towards the doorway. Use the hard trowel to scoop a small amount of grout onto the tile floor.
  • Remove the excess grout. After a few minutes, use a damp sponge to remove the excess grout from the tiles. To do so, dip the sponge in a bucket full of clean water.
  • Rinse the sponge. Rinse the sponge in a new bucket of water. You’ll now have a “grout water” bucket, where you rinse the sponge, and a “fresh water bucket,” where you dip it and wring it out before reusing it on the grout.
  • Test the area. After doing one or two small areas, you’ll want to verify the grout color before completing the job. Let the small test area dry for 2 hours.
  • Finish the floor. If you like the color and look of the grout, re-grout the rest of the floor using steps 2, 3, and 4 until the entire floor is covered.
  • Clean the grout haze. After the three hours, your grout will be hardening. But you don’t want to leave any leftover grout on your tiles. Get a fresh sponge and clean bucket of water.
  • Let grout cure. Now, how long does it take grout to dry? Look at the label on your grout to see directions for curing. It could take one to five days for your grout to fully cure and set.
  • Seal the grout. After the grout has cured, it’s time to seal it. This will protect the grout from bacteria buildup, cracks, or breaks. Use a thin-tipped applicator to apply the sealant to the grout.
