How To Make Mulled Cider in the Slow Cooker image

A recipe for hot mulled cider that is made in the slow cooker and perfect for fall and winter gatherings.

Provided by Christine Gallary

Categories     Beverage     Cider

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 gallon fresh apple cider or unfiltered apple juice
1 medium orange
1 (1 1/2-inch) piece fresh ginger
5 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks
1 tablespoon whole cloves
Orange slices, for serving (optional)

Steps:

  • Fill the slow cooker. Pour the cider or juice into a 5-quart or larger slow cooker.
  • Add the fresh ingredients. Cut the orange into 1/4-inch-thick rounds. Cut the ginger into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Add both to the slow cooker.
  • Add the spices. Add the cinnamon sticks. Add the cloves and optional spices. To make it easier to serve, place the cloves and spices in a tea ball first, or place in a double layer of cheesecloth or paper coffee filter, gather it up into a sachet, and tie closed with kitchen twine.
  • Slow cook the cider for 4 hours. Cover the slow cooker and cook until the flavors meld, 4 hours on LOW. (If there are clumps of spices floating at the top that you wish to remove, strain the cider through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a large pot.) Keep warm and serve in mugs garnished with additional orange slices if desired.

HOT MULLED CROCK POT PUNCH

Categories     Punch Beverage

Time 2h35m

Yield 20

Number Of Ingredients 10

6 inches cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
6 whole allspice
2 cups white cranberries (I used red as white could not be found- my punch was rosey colored)
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons honey
1/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 (750 ml) bottle pinot grigio wine (or similar)

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a 3 qt crock pot.
  • Cover and cook on low setting 2.5 hours. Remove and discard cloves and cinnamon sticks before serving.
  • Directions for spice bag- gather spices and put in a piece of cheesecloth tied with a string. (leave longer threads so it is easier to take out or I hang mine from the end of the crock similar to a tea bag) The punch retains the flavor of the spices without the mess of removal.

SLOW COOKER MULLED WINE

Slow cooker mulled wine image

The gentle, even heat from a slow cooker means the mulled wine doesn't boil and the flavours stay fresh, leave it to heat while you eat, drink and be merry!

slices of orange

Steps:

  • Put all the ingredients (except the slices of orange) in a slow cooker on low for 1 1/2 - 2hrs until hot. Ladle into heatproof glasses and serve with slices of orange. Using the 'keep warm' setting (if your cooker has one) will ensure the mulled wine stays hot during the party.

TRADITIONAL MULLED WINE IN THE CROCK POT

Traditional Mulled Wine in the Crock Pot image

I was wanting to use my crock pot to make a traditional mulled wine for Christmas. I sourced a number of recipes and came up with this

Provided by Abby Girl

Categories     Beverages

Time 3h20m

Yield 12-20 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 1/2 liters red wine, medium to full bodied
2 lemons, cut up
2 oranges, cut up
1/4-1/2 teaspoon nutmeg, to taste (freshly grated)
6 -8 cloves, to taste
1 ounce brandy (or to taste)
1 cup white sugar (optional)
3 cups herbal tea, depending on taste (or citrus influenced tea, (or more)
4 large cinnamon sticks

Steps:

  • Make the tea. Let it steep and cool slightly. Add to crock pot. (I added about 4 cups).
  • Cut the lemons and oranges into slices. Add the red wine. Add the brandy (cognac could be substituted).
  • Add sugar to taste.
  • Add cinnamon sticks and cloves.
  • Heat in the crock pot for approximately 3 hours, or until warmed. (I was turning the pot on/off when the wine got too hot/cold during the evening).
  • Note: Never let the wine mixture boil, or it will spoil. I used home made wine that our friend had given us. I used Ginger Tea, but any herbal tea could be used ~ or ~ for a different taste, use orange or pineapple juice.
