MRE'S ON THE CHEAP : 6 STEPS (WITH PICTURES) - INSTRUCTABLES

From instructables.com
Estimated Reading Time 6 mins
  • Getting Started. I was able to pick up everything in the pictures for $35.85 at the local Wal-Mart. The Kool-Aid, tea mix, peanut butter, salt, creamer, and gum will make 50-60 DIY MRE's.
  • Food Savers Are Your Friend. The Food Saver Vaccum sealer is one of my best survival preps. It has paid for itself a hundred times over. For the DIY MRE you need the Food Saver, the 8 inch roll bags and the 11 inch roll bags.
  • Making the Pouches. First make all the smaller pouches you will need with the 8 inch roll bag. You will need to make 4-5 of these smaller pouches depending on what you choose to add to your DIY MRE.
  • Adding the "extras" Place 2 beef buillon cubes, 2 chicken buillon cubes, 1tsp of salt and 1 tsp of pepper into the bag you made with 4 compartments and seal it up.
  • The BIG Bag. Cut an 11 inch roll bag approx. 10 inches long and seal the bottom. Place the Pop-tart, main meal, the little pouches, and a spoon into the big bag in such a way as you minimize "dead space" and protect the more fragile items (crackers mainly) and seal it all up.
  • The End. I recomend you keep the label from the main meal and place it where you can see it so you know what you are going to be eating for dinner.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE MRES IN 5 STEPS - SHTF BLOG

From shtfblog.com
  • Buy a Vacuum Sealer. The first thing that you have to have is a vacuum sealer and the bags to seal your food in. I bought the Geryon Vacuum Sealer off Amazon.
  • Assemble Your Ingredients or Foods. In this case, again just an example, I’m using: 2-3 Tbs potato flakes [80 calories] 2 packages of cup-of-soup [100 calories]
  • Pack it All in a Vacuum Seal Bag. Once you have everything laid out, you can put it in a vacuum seal bag.
  • Suck Out the Air with a Vacuum Sealer. Once all of the items were in the bag, all you have to do is… Place the open end in the designated slot on your vacuum sealer.
  • Label Everything. The last thing I do is put a date on the package so I’ll know what date they were prepared on. I usually give them a two year expiration although I’m pretty sure they’d be good for a long time after that.

9 AWESOME DO-IT-YOURSELF MRES [RECIPES] - PEW PEW TACTICAL

From pewpewtactical.com
  • Banana Pancake Breakfast. Who doesn’t love pancakes in the morning — and what better way to pretend you’re Jack Johnson than to make banana pancakes? This is an incredibly simple MRE recipe that requires minimal ingredients.
  • Oatmeal-in-the-Woods. I’ve eaten enough oatmeal while backpacking to know that it always needs a little something extra. That’s why I try to make my breakfasts a bit more substantial.
  • Biscuits and Gravy. Perhaps you’re not a big fan of oatmeal for breakfast, and you want something a wee bit more satisfying. Something that’ll really hit the spot and “fill up the corners,” as Tolkien’s hobbits are fond of doing.
  • Macaroni and Cheese Dinner. This is likely one of the cheapest recipes on this entire list. (I paid just over a dollar for everything.) This makes for a pretty hearty evening meal with little fuss too.
  • Fried Rice and SPAM. Before you get all in a tizzy because I’ve got SPAM listed, hear me out. It’s by no means health food, but it does taste good, and it lasts a pretty respectable amount of time.
  • Lentil Casserole. Lentils are a great legume for backpacking because they cook much quicker than other types of beans. If you can find them, instant lentils cook even quicker.
  • Soup and Dumplings. I love soup and dumplings. They’re a fantastic way to warm yourself after a cold day’s worth of hiking through the elements. Not to mention, they always remind me of my Granny’s cooking.
  • Soup and Bread. Here, yet again, we find my fondness for soup at work. The fun thing about this recipe is that if you have bread left over, you get to save it for later to munch on.
  • Potato Soup. Why is soup so often an MRE? Because it’s easy to make, the ingredients are lightweight, and the MRE can store for a significant amount of time.
