Number Of Ingredients 10

3 cups all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
3 teaspoons caraway seeds
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1 large egg, room temperature
1 cup fat-free milk
1/3 cup canola oil

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, whisk together first 7 ingredients. In another bowl, whisk together egg, milk and oil. Add to flour mixture; stir just until moistened. , Transfer to a 9x5-in. loaf pan coated with cooking spray. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, 40-50 minutes. Cool in pan 10 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool.

Prepared biscuit dough is the base for this pull-apart loaf, which is formed by rolling the dough in olive oil and herbs before piling in a bundt pan, which helps turn the loaf crispy and golden brown. Our tasters called them the Southern version of pizza-shop garlic knots.

Cooking spray
1 cup finely grated Parmesan
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon granulated garlic
1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
2 packages prepared biscuits (about 16 biscuits), each biscuit cut in half
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

Steps:

  • Position a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F. Spray a bundt or tube pan lightly with cooking spray.
  • Toss the Parmesan, oregano, garlic, rosemary and thyme in a small bowl until well mixed. Roll each biscuit half into a ball. Put 8 of the balls in a medium bowl and drizzle with 2 tablespoons of the oil, tossing until well coated. Transfer each ball to the Parmesan mixture to coat, then place in the prepared pan. Working in batches of 8, repeat with the remaining dough balls, overlapping in the pan as necessary.
  • Bake until the dough is puffed and browned, about 50 minutes; check halfway through the baking time and tent with foil if the bread is browning too quickly.
  • Let the bread cool 10 minutes. Loosen the bread from the sides of the pan with a thin spatula. Invert the pan onto a baking sheet, then flip the bread (decorative-side up) onto a serving plate.

2 garlic cloves, minced
1/3 cup reduced-fat margarine
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 loaf (1 pound) unsliced French bread, halved lengthwise
3/4 cup shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese

Steps:

  • In a small nonstick skillet, saute onions and garlic in margarine for 1-2 minutes. Stir in the seasonings. Brush over cut sides of French bread; sprinkle with cheese. , Wrap each piece of bread loosely in a large piece of heavy-duty foil; seal edges of foil. 1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon basil
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/4 teaspoon sage
1/4 cup margarine or 1/4 cup butter
1 cup old cheddar cheese or 1 cup monterey jack cheese
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup yogurt
1/2 cup milk
1/8 cup poppy seed

Steps:

  • Combine dry ingredients.
  • Cut in margarine or butter.
  • Combine cheese, egg, yogurt and milk, and add to other ingredients.
  • Dump into a round or square 9-inch pan, sprinkle with poppy seeds.

People are astounded to learn I make this savory Italian bread from scratch in less that an hour. With this recipe from my brother-in-law, warm slices are a delicious and easy alternative to garlic toast. I'll sometimes use this bread as a snack or appetizer.

2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon quick-rise yeast
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup warm water (120° to 130°)
1 tablespoon canola oil
TOPPING:
1/4 to 1/3 cup prepared Italian salad dressing
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
Dash pepper
1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine 2 cups flour, yeast, sugar and salt. Beat in water and oil until blended. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough., Turn onto a floured surface; knead for 1-2 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 20 minutes. , Punch dough down; place on a greased 12-in. pizza pan and pat into a 12-in. circle. Brush with salad dressing. I made this recipe on Christmas morning and it was a hit with everyone. I prefer this bread with dill, but I think there are many combinations of herbs you could use. Also, you can use 2 cups all-purpose flour, instead of the two different types the original calls for.

1 1/2 cups white flour
1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon brown sugar, packed
1/3 cup fresh chives, chopped
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
1/2 teaspoon fresh thyme or 1/2 teaspoon fresh dill, chopped
1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
1 egg
3/4 cup milk

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 F and lightly oil a loaf pan.
  • Mix dry ingredients together in a large bowl and then stir in the herbs and cheese.
  • In a smaller bowl, beat the egg and milk together.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  • The batter will be stiff, but this is normal.
  • Use a spatula to put the batter in the loaf pan, smoothing the top when done.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes until the top is solid and a knife in the centre comes out clean.
  • Cool for 5 minutes on a wire rack before removing from the pan.
  • Serve warm.
