Crackling homemade bread makes an average day extraordinary. Enjoy this beautiful crusty bread recipe as is, or stir in a few favorites like cheese, garlic, herbs and dried fruits. -Megumi Garcia, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Yield 1 loaf (16 pieces).

Number Of Ingredients 5

1-1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1-3/4 cups warm water (110° to 115°)
3-1/2 cups plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, divided
2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon cornmeal or additional flour

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Using a rubber spatula, stir in 3-1/2 cups flour and salt to form a soft, sticky dough. Do not knead. Cover and let rise at room temperature 1 hour., Stir down dough (dough will be sticky). Turn onto a floured surface; with floured hands pat into a 9-in. square. Fold square into thirds, forming a 9x3-in. rectangle. Fold rectangle into thirds, forming a 3-in. square. Place in a large greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise at room temperature until almost doubled, about 1 hour., Punch down dough and repeat folding process. Return dough to bowl; refrigerate, covered, overnight., Grease the bottom of a disposable foil roasting pan with sides at least 4 in. high; dust pan with cornmeal. Turn dough onto a floured surface. Knead gently 6-8 times; shape into a 6-in. round loaf. Place into prepared pan; dust top with remaining 1 tablespoon flour. Cover pan and let rise at room temperature until dough expands to a 7-1/2-in. loaf, about 1-1/4 hours. , Preheat oven to 500°. Using a sharp knife, make a slash (1/4 in. deep) across top of loaf. Cover pan tightly with foil. Bake on lowest oven rack 25 minutes., Reduce oven setting to 450°. Remove foil; bake bread until deep golden brown, 25-30 minutes. Remove loaf to a wire rack to cool.

A really good comfort bread. Its not spongy like wonder bread, and goes very well with lentil soup.

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 1/2 cups warm water
1 tablespoon dry yeast
1/4 cup molasses or 1/4 cup blackstrap molasses
1/4 cup honey
1 cup wheat gluten
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup wheat bran
1 cup rye flour
1 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup oats
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
1/4 cup walnuts (chopped)
3 teaspoons salt (optional)
1 cup wheat flour (additional)
oats

Steps:

  • Stir yeast and molasses into water.
  • Mix all dry ingredients except additional wheat flour and oat flakes. Combine dry mixture with yeast mixture. Knead in additional flour to form a dough.
  • Let rise in bowl until size doubles (about 1 hour). And grease a large cookie sheet (or two medium ones).
  • Preheat oven @ 350F and punch the dough and roll into two loaves. Next roll on oat flakes to make it look fancy. Place side by side on oiled cookie sheets and let them rise about 45 minutes.
  • Bake 45 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean.

1 box (16 oz) Betty Crocker™ Supreme original brownie mix
Water, vegetable oil and egg called for on brownie mix box
1 teaspoon unsweetened baking cocoa

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Line 8-inch square pan with foil, allowing some to hang over edges of pan. Grease bottom and sides of foil with shortening or cooking spray. Make brownie batter as directed on box. Spread in pan.
  • Bake 35 to 38 minutes or until toothpick inserted 2 inches from side of pan comes out almost clean. Cool completely on cooling rack, about 1 1/2 hours. Freeze in pan 15 minutes.
  • Using foil to lift, remove brownies from pan, and peel foil away. With deep 2 1/2-inch heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut 7 brownies. Save leftover pieces for snacking.
  • Arrange brownies on serving plate. With small strainer, sprinkle brownies and plate with cocoa.
