11 HARDWOOD FLOOR TRENDS FOR 2022: COLORS & STYLES
From builddirect.com
Estimated Reading Time 9 mins
- Wire Brushed Hardwood. As the name implies, this type of flooring is finished by scraping a wire brush across the surface. A weathered appearance is achieved as the softer parts of the wood are pulled out and the heart grain becomes more apparent.
- Light Brown. Brown has long been a favorite color for hardwood floors but with some experts predicting a move toward lighter shades for hardwood floors in 2022, light brown is becoming a more popular alternative.
- White Oak. Oak is considered to be an extremely durable floor covering and white oak has a smooth, tight grain that goes well with many modern decors.
- Dark Hardwoods. There is a move toward lighter hardwood floor colors in 2022, but in some areas of the country, dark hardwoods are still very popular, especially in the northern states.
- Fumed Wood. Fuming is a process of coloring wood by placing it in a vat and hitting it with ammonia vapor to bring the natural tannins or stains to the surface of the wood.
- Distressed Styles. Face it, most of us don’t have the time or ability to find a 100-year-old barn, tear it down and finish the wood for flooring. Distressed wood flooring is typically manufactured today and not the result of aging and weathering in the elements.
- Herringbone and Chevron Patterns. Both are very popular patterns and the main difference is in the way the end of each board is cut. The herringbone pattern ends with a 90-degree cut while the chevron pattern has an angled end.
- High-Variation Styles. This look is a favorite in 2022, giving your floor a more natural appearance as there are multiple colors and plank widths in the same design.
- Wider Planks. These planks are the chameleon of hardwood flooring. In smaller spaces, they offer a more open feel and in larger rooms, the look becomes more rustic.
- Higher Quality Engineered Hardwood Options. Contrary to popular opinion, engineered hardwood floors were not developed to give homeowners a cheaper version of real hardwood.

- Painted White. In this charming eat-in kitchen, painted white floorboards lend a Scandi feel to a simple kitchen. Painting floorboards that have seen better days is a cost-effective way to renovate a space.
- Honey Blonde Oak. This wide-plank oak flooring has a medium golden-tone blonde finish that adds warmth to a contemporary room with a luxe minimalist feel.
- Gray-Toned. The clean lines and all-white palette on the walls, ceilings, furnishings, fireplace wall, pendant lighting, and even art of this contemporary living room gets a touch of relief from modern gray-toned flooring.
- Natural and Unfinished. The natural unfinished look of oak or pine flooring with a clear matte coat to protect it from wear and tear creates a simple, calming feel that makes a great stage for Scandi styling in neutral tones of white, black, brown, and gray.
- Black Satin. In this ultra-contemporary dining room, chic black wood flooring adds a grounding element. A satin finish allows light from the large windows and glass door to bounce around the small space.
- Bleached White. The bleached appearance of white European oak floors in this contemporary space in New York demonstrates that white oak flooring is more versatile than being a go-to choice for Scandi-style interiors.
- Chocolate Brown. Light-colored wood floors might be on trend, but there are always going to be people who like nothing more than a classic brown finish.
- Soft Beige. Soft polished sandy beige tinted hardwood floors are a perfect choice for this modernist remodel of a Victorian-style home in London. Complementary storage built out in a similar wood tone and light maple upper cabinetry blends with white walls and black mid-century furniture classics like the black 1960s Panton chairs around the round dining table.
- Pale Walnut. Pale walnut-colored wood flooring in a wide plank gives a modern feel to a room while adding a touch more warmth than lighter wood finishes.
- Weathered Gray. The weathered gray reclaimed floor boards in this industrial conversion in Birmingham, Alabama have a rustic appearance thanks to years of exposure to the elements.

- European White Oak. “I love warm lighter woods for the floor. I think this has been and continues to be a big trend in home design. My favorite wood species is a European White Oak; in a wide plank (above 9’’).
- Dark Charcoal. “We love a dark charcoal wide plank wood floor to ground a space and keep it looking rich. We custom blended three Minwax stains to get our favorite shade of charcoal without any red or orange hue’s coming through.
- Cool Brown Walnut & Yellow Oak. “I've watched clients and showrooms shift away from the cool gray finishes that were so popular for a couple years, and move towards wood tones that seem closer to their natural state.
- Bright Painted Hardwood. “Bright painted hardwood floors are warm, soft, and forgiving when you drop something, and you can repaint them whenever you feel like it!
- Dark Painted Hardwood. “We’re currently obsessed with painted wood floors. It’s such an easy way to breathe fresh life into hardwood and just one more surface space to add a pop of color.”
- Unstained White Oak. “Unstained oak provides a raw, organic look that serves as a fantastic foundation on which to build layers and layers of color. Many stained woods limit the color story you can tell—not so with unstained white oak.”
- Graphite Hardwood. “There's no better way to make wood floors feel elevated than by adding a dark stain. When contrasted with a light wall, a dark floor helps to make the room feel brighter and taller.
- Light Unstained Hardwood. “Au natural! go nude this winter—no stains needed. Kinda like the sexy bedhead, keeping it natural has a subtle statement that speaks volumes!”
- Brown Stained Oak. “We see floors getting warmer as 2019 rolls on. The Scandinavian white oak look still holds our heart, but we believe richer brown stains are making an insurgence into more transitional style homes this year.”
- Soft-Hued Wide Plank Hardwood. “We see interior furnishings becoming more adventuresome in their style, materials and coloration. There is no better way to ground unique, vibrant, sculptural interior decor items than with a textural, wide plank, softly natural wood flooring.
