BABA'S 1/2 HOUR PUDDING



Baba's 1/2 Hour Pudding image

This is a recipe that my mother used to make for us when we were kids. It became my brothers favorite. It's a great winter dessert, very simple and easy, one dish clean up. When ready you will have a delicious cake with a sweet sauce. This recipe asks for nutmeg, however if that is not your favorite spice flavour I'm sure you could substitute cinnamon and it would turn out just as great. This recipe can also be adjusted using low fat milk, soy, whole wheat flour etc.

1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup milk
2 cups boiling water
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Steps:

  • In a casserole dish add, sugar,flour,baking powder, and soda mix with a fork to blend then add milk. Stir until everything is incorporated.
  • In a seperate bowl mix water, sugar, and nutmeg.
  • Using a large spoon pour the water mixture over the spoon and onto the dough mixture gently so as not to disurb the dough.
  • Place in oven and bake for 1/2 hour. Cake will bake and rise above the sauce mixture.

1 package yellow cake mix
3/4 cup milk
1 egg
1/4 cup corn syrup or 1/4 cup maple syrup

Steps:

  • Place syrup in bottom of pudding mold before adding batter.
  • Prepare the cake mix with the egg and milk or water according to directions on package.
  • Pour into a greased 2 to 2 1/2 qt pudding mold and cover with a lid, foil or greased double wax paper.
  • NOTE: When cooking for smaller numbers, make up the whole cake mix as directed, put pour only half the cake batter into a 1 1/2 qt mold and steam for 1 hour.
  • Alternately, fill in- dividual molds and steam for 20-25 minutes.
  • Bake remaining cake batter.

  • Mix the first 8 ingredients well and put in a greased baking dish.
  • Mix the last 3 ingredients and pour over batter.
  • Bake 25-30 minutes at 350°F in a 2 1/2 quart casserole dish that has been sprayed with vegetable oil spray.
  • Serve hot with ice cream.

This is another old recipe that has been revived....simple , delicious and my favorite thing....easy!!!

2 c flour
1/4 c butter
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c sugar
1 c milk
1/2 c raisins (optional)

Steps:

  • 1. Mix a ll dry ingredients, rubbing butter into flour, add milk. Mix well. Drop in spoonfuls into a greased cake pan. Mix together: 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup butter 1 1/2 cup boiling water 1 tsp vanilla Pour the sauce gently over the batter . Bake at 375 degrees till brown/ the pudding rises to the top and leaves a taffy sauce base. Delicious warm with ice cream or whipping cream.

1/4 cup brown sugar
1 slice pineapple
to taste candied cherries or to taste almonds, blanched

Steps:

  • Mix butter with brown sugar an
  • d spread in bottom of pudding mold.
  • Add fruit or nuts of choice. Prepare the cake mix with the egg and milk or water according to directions on package. Pour into a greased 2 to 2 1/2 qt pudding mold over fruit/nut mixture and cover with a lid, foil o greased double wax paper.
  • Place the mold in a sauce pan of boiling water and keep the level of the water half way up mold during cooking.
  • Steam for 1 1/2 hours.
  • Unmold t he pudding while hot and serve with cream, ice cream, or custard.

MUM'S HALF HOUR PUDDING

This was so good :) The sauce is like warm caramel.

CAKE
1/3 c brown sugar, firmly packed
1 c raisins (just regular sunmaid raisins)
1 c all purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
pinch salt
1/2 c sour milk (buttermilk substitute) * to make sour milk, add 1 tbsp vinegar to ½ cup milk and let stand until it thickens, then add to your dry ingredients.
SAUCE
1 1/3 c boiling water
1 c brown sugar, firmly packed
1 tsp vanilla extract

Steps:

  • 1. CAKE: Mix dry ingredients and raisins in a bowl. Put this mix into a greased pudding baking dish. (small round casserole dish).
  • 2. SAUCE: Pour 1 1/3 cups boiling water into a heat-safe bowl, add 1 cup brown sugar and 1 tsp vanilla. Mix this together and pour over batter.
  • 3. Bake in moderate oven for 30 minutes or so. (Mum says moderate oven is about 350F)
