How it works. Guanfacine may be given to reduce high blood pressure. Guanfacine works by stimulating alpha2 adrenergic receptors in the brain. This stimulation reduces nerve impulses from the vasomotor center (located in the medulla oblongata of the brain) to the heart and blood vessels.
Upsides. May be used in the treatment of high blood pressure. A once-daily extended-release form of guanfacine (Intuniv) is approved for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years.
Downsides. If you are between the ages of 18 and 60, take no other medication or have no other medical conditions, side effects you are more likely to experience include
