PERFECT GRILLED ONIONS HACK!

Perfect Grilled Onions Hack! image

Make the most perfect grilled onions every single time with my amazing grilled onion hack! The perfect addition to so many meals!

Provided by Natalie

Categories     Side Dish

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 large yellow onion (sliced)
2 tablespoons butter or ghee
1 teaspoon kosher salt
water

Steps:

  • Heat your cast iron skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the butter, onions and kosher salt. Cook stirring every few minutes.
  • As soon as the onions start to look a little dry, add in a few tablespoons of water. This will both prevent the onions from drying out and keep them juicy and cooking at an even temperature. The water will evaporate as it cooks, leaving you with perfectly juicy onions. I usually add water twice during the cooking process.
  • Continue to grill the onions uncovered until they are soft and golden brown. About 30 minutes.
  • Serve warm or cold.
  • See the Recipe Notes below for more tips, FAQ's and recipe substitutions.

Time 20m

Number Of Ingredients 4

2-3 small or medium onions
1 tablespoon avocado oil
kosher salt & ground black pepper, to season
for serving, as desired: aged balsamic vinegar, fresh basil, fresh oregano, fresh thyme, etc.

Steps:

  • Preheat the grill for medium-high direct heat grilling, about 450-500 degrees F. While the grill preheats, prep the onions. Slice the onion in half lengthwise, leaving both the tip & root end in tact. Peel away the tough outer layers & discard. Slice lengthwise through each half 2-3 more times, taking care to leave the tip & root end in tact, creating 6-8 wedges. Place the sliced onions on a small baking sheet or large plate. Drizzle the oil over top, tossing to coat in the oil. Season with 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt & ground black pepper as desired, tossing again to coat.
  • Place the onions on the grill, cut side facing down. Grill 7-8 minutes, flipping the onions halfway through, until tender & charred as desired. For larger onions, the total cook time may be closer to 10 minutes.
  • , with a splash of balsamic & sprinkling of fresh herbs as desired. If serving on a grilled vegetable platter, drizzle with a light & bright herbaceous sauce, like pesto or chimichurri. Grilled onions are also amazing add-ons for any variety of meals, from grilled chicken bowls to the best-ever burgers to grilled pizza. Enjoy!

WHOLE GRILLED ONIONS

Whole Grilled Onions image

Grilled onions make an easy and unique side dish with steaks or chops. Use Vidalia onions or another kind of sweet onion in this simple preparation.

Provided by Diana Rattray

Categories     Side Dish     Dinner

Time 1h45m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 4

4 large onions (sweet, such as Vidalia)
Dash salt
Dash pepper
4 tablespoons butter

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Slice the stem from the onions and peel them, leaving the root intact. Slice a bit of the root off, just enough to provide a flat end so they won't wobble.
  • Working from the top and using a sharp knife, a small melon baller, or apple corer, cut the cores from the onions. You should have a cavity about 1-inch across and almost through to the bottom of the onion without piercing it. Use the cored-out onion pieces for another purpose.
  • Salt and pepper the onion cavities and then fill each onion with 1 tablespoon of butter. Sprinkle the onions lightly with a bit more salt and pepper.
  • Wrap the onions in foil, gathering at the top and twisting to seal.
  • Cook in a closed grill for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours over medium indirect coals .
  • Untwist top of foil and spread open about 10 minutes before serving.
  • Leave them on the grill for more smoked flavor, if you like.
  • Remove the onions to a serving platter.

3/4 cup roasted garlic
Olive Oil

GRILLED ONIONS AND POTATOES

Grilled Onions and Potatoes image

My family loves these tasty potatoes. There are never leftovers. Once the potatoes are all tucked in their foil packets, they can wait overnight to be grilled the next day. Great for camping. Check foil packets at 15 and 30 minutes to ensure they are not burning. May require a few more minutes to ensure all is cooked through.
