1 cup olive oil
1 sugar
4 eggs
1/2 cup ouzo
1/2 teaspoon anise
2 lemons, juice and zest
5 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Beat oil, sugar, and eggs until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in Ouzo, anise, lemon juice, and zest.
  • Whisk flour and baking powder together.
  • Add to mixture , kneading in bowl until mixed and doesn't cling to bowl.
  • With oiled hands, roll small pieces of dough out in strips to make omega sign, figure 8.
  • Place on a greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 30 minutes.

Added for ZWT #6's trip to Greece, Ouzo adds a light anise taste to this dish of chicken with vegetables in a cream sauce. Serve with Greek salad and crusty loaf of bread.

1 lb skinless chicken breast
1 1/3 cups carrots, coarsely grated
1 1/3 cups zucchini, coarsely grated
1/2 cup heavy cream or 1/2 cup half-and-half
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons ouzo
sea salt
fresh ground pepper

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a heavy-bottomed frying pan. When hot, add the chicken and sauté for 4 minutes. Add the carrots and zucchini and continue to sauté 3 minutes longer. Add the ouzo, cream, salt, and pepper and cook 2-3 minutes more until the sauce melds.
