One of our classic recipes, refreshed! A little less sugar in both the filling and the topping highlights the tart apples. We prefer it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

7 to 8 large (9 cups) tart cooking apples, peeled, cored, sliced 1/4 inch
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar
2 large Land O Lakes® Eggs
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup Land O Lakes® Butter melted
Ice cream, if desired

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F.
  • Place sliced apples into ungreased 13x9-inch baking dish.
  • Combine 1/4 cup sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon in bowl; sprinkle over apples.
  • Combine flour, 3/4 cup sugar, eggs, baking powder, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and salt in bowl; mix until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over apples. Pour melted butter over topping. Bake 45-55 minutes or until lightly browned and apples are tender.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream, if desired.

4 lbs granny smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 tablespoon fresh squeezed lemon juice
1/4 cup flour
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled and cut into small pieces
2 cups all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
5 tablespoons shortening
3/4 cup milk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400°; butter a deep 9 x 13 inch baking dish.
  • Place the sliced apples in a large bowl and sprinkle them with lemon juice.
  • Mix the flour, cinnamon, and sugar together in a separate bowl.
  • Sprinkle the cinnamon mixture over the apples and toss gently to coat.
  • The dough: In a bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and baking powder; cut in the shortening using a pastry blender until the mixture becomes crumbly.
  • Add the milk and stir with a fork.
  • Form the dough into a ball and turn out onto a lightly floured surface.
  • Roll the dough out to a size that is 1/2 to 1 inch larger than your baking pan.
  • Pour the apple mixture into the prepared dish and dot with the pieces of butter.
  • Place the dough over the top of the apple filling and seal the edges.
  • Cut vents in the top of the crust to allow steam to escape while baking.
  • Bake for 10 minutes; decrease oven temperature to 375° and bake for another 30-40 minutes, or until the crust is lightly browned on the top and the apples are tender.

Simple, old-fashioned apple crisp. If you want something simple and homemade on hand, you can double the filling recipe (I use a 5-pound bag of Granny Smith apples) and freeze half of it.

½ cup white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup quick-cooking oats
½ cup unsalted butter, diced
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Combine apples, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg for filling in a bowl; transfer to the prepared baking dish.
  • Combine brown sugar, flour, oats, butter, and cinnamon for topping in a large bowl. Sprinkle on top of filling.

10 -12 baking apples, peeled, cored and sliced
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 1/4 cups flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 lb butter
2/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup hot water
1/2 lemon, juice of

Steps:

  • Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Arrange slices in the bottom of a lightly greased 12x9 pan.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon.
  • Mix flour and brown sugar.
  • Cut in butter until crumbly and set aside.
  • Syrup: Combine ingredients and stir well.
  • Drizzle half of mixture over apples.
  • Cover with flour mix.
  • Pour remaining syrup over top.
  • Bake at 350 for one hour.
