  • Wound cleaning. Castile soap can be used to clean minor wounds. Add 2 teaspoons of soap to 2 cups of filtered drinking water to create a cleansing solution.
  • Deodorant. Castile soap can be used to make a natural deodorant. Add 1/2 teaspoon of castile soap and 1 teaspoon of sea salt to a small spray bottle and use in the underarm area as needed.
  • Dish soap. Add 1 part of castile soap to 10 parts of water to make a liquid dish soap.
  • Dishwasher detergent. Use a natural option to replace your usual dishwasher detergent. Mix equal parts of castile soap and water in a bottle. Fill your detergent compartment as normal.
  • Window cleaner. Freshen up and shine your windows with a natural spray. Use 1 tablespoon of castile soap in a quart of water to clean your windows. Then rinse using soda water and dry the windows with newspaper.
  • Shampoo. Pre-make a mixture of 1 tablespoon of castile soap in a cup of water. Use a small amount of this diluted castile soap to wash your hair. Or simply work a small amount of neat (undiluted) soap into wet hair.
  • Face wash. Castile soap is mild enough to use on your face and strong enough to potentially prevent acne and kill harmful bacteria. Rub a few drops of soap onto your face and rinse as usual.
  • Body wash. Squeeze a small amount of castile soap into your hands to use as a body wash. Use a washcloth or loofah to gently exfoliate your skin.
  • Hand soap. You can easily make your own hand soap or foaming hand soap. Add 2 tablespoons of castile soap to 12 ounces of water. It’s optional to add 1/2 teaspoon of a carrier oil or any essential oil.
  • Shaving. You can use castile soap in place of shaving cream. Lather up a bit of pure soap in your hands and then apply it to the area you want to shave.

8 CASTILE SOAP WARNINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW – RUSTICWISE

From rusticwise.com
  • Remember to dilute properly. If you’re new to using this natural cleaner, it’s important to note that liquid formulations are concentrated Castile soap.
  • Keep out of eyes. While this may seem obvious, many people equate “natural and non-toxic” to mean it’s completely safe. As with all soaps, shampoos, and conditioners (handcrafted or commercial), it’s best to keep it out of your peepers.
  • Don’t treat it like a disinfectant. While this soap does a good job cleaning, it doesn’t disinfect or kill bacteria. Soap acts as a surfactant (or surface-active agent) to reduce surface tension between water and oil/dirt particles.
  • Avoid adding anything acidic to this alkaline soap. Unless you’re performing a fun science experiment, avoid adding acidic ingredients to your Castile soap.
  • Don’t forget to follow up with a vinegar rinse. If you have hard water at home, you may notice that after wiping a shiny faucet with a soapy Castile solution, a white film, or residue, remains.
  • Avoid using on color treated hair (or dry, damaged hair) This next warning comes straight from Lisa Bronner herself (of Dr. Bronner’s). She does not recommend using an alkaline solution such as natural Castile on dyed or color treated hair.⁴
  • Use on plants sparingly. If you’re a proud plant parent, you may have heard of natural ways to rid your (plant) babies of pests—with a Castile spray.
  • Use within a reasonable time frame. Many good (and natural) things have a shorter shelf life. This rings true with Castile soap, which doesn’t contain any of the preservatives of its commercial detergent counterparts.
