1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon molasses (blackstrap)
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger (or you can use 1 Tablespoons fresh grated or sliced ginger)
3 1/2 cups water

Steps:

  • Dissolve brown sugar and molasses in vinegar, stir well.
  • Add ginger and stir.
  • Pour into a quart-sized jar and add enough water to fill to the top.
  • Store in the fridge, and serve over ice. Makes 4 servings.

Steps:

  • Wash, peel and slice ginger. Throw it in a jug filled with water and place in the fridge overnight.
  • The following morning, pour into a glass and heat up until lukewarm. Squeeze in a wedge of a lemon and drink before your breakfast.
  • Drink throughout the day cold (or lukewarm if preferred). Always squeeze lemon in right before drinking to get the most health benefits out of it.

15 ounces Basic Water Kefir
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 Inch slice of ginger

Steps:

  • Using a clean garlic press, squeeze the ginger root through the garlic press. You can also use a juicer to extract the juice. Fresh-squeezed ginger works much better than placing a piece of ginger root in the bottle to ferment with water kefir.
  • Add your squeezed ginger root and lemon juice to your 16 ounce bottle. (Make sure you use thick bottles such as Grolsch or Bormioli glass bottles. Bottles bought at craft stores can explode.)
  • Add 15 ounces of Basic Water Kefir to the bottle leaving a small amount of room (about 1 inch) at the top. Seal your bottle.
  • 2nd Fermented Water Kefir only needs to sit 1-3 days or until it becomes bubbly. Check it often by opening it to see if it is bubbly. (Warmer homes take less time.)
  • Once ready, you can drink or refrigerate for storing. (Drink within 1 week for optimal flavor and benefits.)

I was threshing hay the other day (ok, actually I was mowing the lawn, but close enough), and thought I'd try it - the ginger and the vinegar give it a nice tang. If the vinegar is a bit much, you can add less vinegar or mix it with ginger ale.

  • Start in early spring. Ginger is a tropical plant that does not survive frost. Plant after the last spring frost, or at the start of the wet season if you live in the tropics.
  • Choose your ginger plant. There are many species of ginger. To grow the most common edible variety, Zingiber officinale, all you need is the ginger root from the grocery store.
  • Cut the rhizome into pieces (optional). If you'd like to grow more than one plant, cut the ginger with a sanitized knife or shears. Any piece at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide with one or more eyes can grow into a separate plant.
  • Prepare the soil. Ginger thrives on high-quality, well-draining soil. Mixing garden soil with an equal amount of well-rotted compost should do the trick.
  • Choose a location. Ginger prefers partial shade or areas with morning sun only, away from large roots. The growing location should be sheltered from wind and moist, but not swampy.

  • Ginger Tea. Ginger tea is easy to make. Measure 1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger into a heat proof mug or glass and pour 1 cup of boiling water over it. Cover with a saucer and let sit until cool enough to drink before straining.
