  • If your fridge is making noise near the bottom. If you hear a loud rattling noise near the bottom of the refrigerator, the culprit is likely to be the drain pan, says Doug Rogers, president of repair company Mr. Appliance.
  • If the fridge noise is coming from the back. A fridge making noise from the back of the unit is probably the condenser fan or the compressor. “If you determine the noise is caused by the condenser fan, try cleaning away dust and debris that may have accumulated between the fan blades, using a soft brush,” says Rogers.
  • If the noise is coming from inside the refrigerator. Hear a noise inside the refrigerator that sounds like a squeak or rattle? It’s probably the circulation fan, which pushes air through the freezer and fridge sections of your appliance.
  • If it sounds like squealing or a bird chirping in your fridge. Are you a home owner? Claim your home to stay up-to-date of your home‘s value and equity.
  • If it sounds like buzzing or humming in your refrigerator. Your light is probably close to going out if you hear an electrical buzzing sound, says Sears home service knowledge author Adrienne Berain-Normann.
  • If it sounds like knocking. Rogers says a knocking noise is likely to be a sign that the condenser is failing or that the fan motor isn’t working properly.
  • If a clicking sound is coming from your ice maker. A click-click-click coming from your ice maker could mean that the water line valve is loose or not connected to the water supply.

15 COMMON REFRIGERATOR NOISES & DIY TROUBLESHOOTING …

From soundproofly.com
  • Loud Noise. The first thing is to identify where the noise is coming from. If it’s from the front, it could be the evaporator fan. If it’s from the back, it could be the defrost timer, the condenser fan, or the compressor.
  • Buzzing. Your fridge might make a buzzing noise if the compressor and fans are grimy and clogged up. The condenser coils may collect hair and other debris, which needs to be removed regularly.
  • Knocking. A knocking in your fridge making noise may be more ominous. Your evaporator fan may be the culprit. The blade may have become clogged or damaged, or the motor may have failed.
  • Humming. A humming fridge is not necessarily an indication that something is wrong. But if it suddenly starts making louder or different humming noises, you need to investigate further.
  • Clicking. If the condenser coil is clogged with dirt, the compressor may become overloaded, which could cause a clicking sound. You may find your fridge and freezer are still cool but not as much as they should be.
  • Gurgling. Hearing your fridge gurgle may simply mean it is working normally. During the cooling cycle, the refrigerant liquid flows through the tubes, which you can hear as a gurgle.
  • Grinding. The compressor and condenser coils may be the cause of your fridge making a grinding noise. However, it may also be down to the recirculation fan getting iced up or a bearing in the fan having worn out.
  • Popping. A fridge constantly changes temperature as it cycles through the cooling process. These temperature variations may cause the expansion and contraction of plastic in the fridge, which will cause a popping sound.
  • Sizzling. If you hear your refrigerator making a noise similar to sizzling, this may be nothing more than water dripping onto the defrost heater. This is a normal part of the defrost cycle in self-defrosting fridges.
  • Rattling. A rattling sound from your fridge may mean that the drain pan is loose. Other reasons may include: The compressor may be faulty. Dirt accumulating on the fan blades of the condenser.
