- Start with freshly washed hair. You want to make sure your hair is fresh, clean, and good to go before you start. If you try and do a flexi rod set with product buildup already in your hair, there's a good chance that your curls will end up looking sad and limp.
- Detangle your hair. Depending on the length and thickness of your hair, Pearson says you'll want to part your hair into four to six sections to make the detangling process easier.
- Apply foaming mousse. According to Pearson, y0u should massage one to two pumps of foaming mousse onto each section of your hair. The key here is to start light, slowly building up if you need more product.
- Wrap your hair around the flexi rods. Starting from your ends, wind the hair around the rods using a windmill motion, says Pearson. This means that as you're twisting your hair, you're also turning the flexi rod to create a spiral curl—this technique adds volume to your hair, while also giving your curls the same look that you'd get if you used a curling wand.
- Sit under a hooded dryer or air-dry. Once you're done wrapping, Pearson says you've got two options: You can sit under a hood dryer for about 30-45 minutes or you can go heat-free.
- Remove the rods. When your hair is finally dry, carefully remove the rods in a counter-clockwise motion to make sure your curl holds their shape, says Pearson.
