8 (SOMETIMES SURPRISING) FOODS THAT MAKE YOU FART - BBC …

- Fatty foods, including pork and beef. Fatty foods slow down digestion, which can leave them festering in your gut, fermenting and getting pongy. Fatty meats are doubly tricky because they are rich in the amino acid methionine, which contains sulphur.
- Beans. Beans and lentils contain lots of fibre, but they also contain raffinose, a complex sugar that we don’t process well. These sugars make their way to the intestine, where your gut goes to town using them for energy, resulting in hydrogen, methane and even smelly sulphur.
- Eggs. Contrary to popular belief, eggs don't make most of us fart. But they do contain sulphur-packed methionine. So if you don't want smelly farts, don't eat eggs alongside fart-causing foods such as beans or fatty meats.
- Onions. Onions, artichokes, garlic and leeks all contain fructans – carbs that can cause gas and bloating.
- Dairy. Dairy from cows and goats contains lactose, a sugar that can cause gas to build up. On top of that, about 65 percent of the world's adult population has a degree of intolerance to lactose, and eating dairy can leave them feeling bloated and gassy.

- Eat meals and snacks slowly and carefully. The majority of gas produced by the body forms because of swallowed air. A person cannot completely avoid swallowing air, but certain habits can cause excess air to enter the body.
- Stop chewing gum. Many people chew gum to keep their breath fresh and to help avoid snacking. However, those that do may find they have more gas than others.
- Look out for food intolerances and allergies. Different people may be sensitive to different foods and may have allergies that bring about a reaction in the body.
- Avoid tight-fitting clothes. Loose clothing helps to ensure a person remains as comfortable as possible should bloating occur. Wearing clothes that are not too tight also helps when gas does occur, allowing it to pass freely out of the body.
- Avoid or reduce intake of gas-producing foods. Some foods are known to increase gas production. Carbohydrates that contain fructose, lactose, insoluble fiber, and starch ferment in the large intestine.

- Onions and Garlic. Onions and garlic can make you gassy because they have high concentrations of fructans, a type of carb that's tough to digest, Finkel says.
- Cruciferous Vegetables. Broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts can be tough on some stomachs. What gives you gas is the raffinose in cruciferous veggies — this is another type of sugar that can be tough to break down and may sometimes leave you feeling bloated and in pain, Brissette says.
- Starchy Vegetables. Starchy vegetables that cause gas include potatoes, sweet potatoes and corn, per the International Foundation for Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD).
- Legumes. Admittedly, beans fall into the legume category. But they aren't the only gas-producing plants in this family — other legumes like peas and lentils can also lead to excessive farting, according to the IFFGD.
- High-FODMAP Fruits. Now that we've covered veggies, you may be wondering if there are fruits that cause gas. And indeed, some fruit does cause gas. Not all fruits will bring on the fumes, but high-FODMAP options that contain lots of fructose or sorbitol can, Finkel says.
