  • Wash and dry your towel beforehand. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
  • Choose designs with solid stitching. These are better because delicate or thin stitches will get lost in the towel texture! Additionally, solid patterns and stitching are more stable and are better suited to the traditional wear and tear that comes with toweling.
  • Play around with placement, and use what works for you! For fool-proof placement, centre your design 4 inches above the lower border of your towel. This is the standard placement for larger ones like bath towels or beach towels and will look great when folded.
  • Use an 11 or 14 sized needle. A 14 needle is extra sharp and is great for penetrating fabric without distressing it. These are the sizes that are generally recommended however they are not universal.
  • Use a cut-away stabilizer. Whilst you can basically use any stabilizer for towels, using a cut-away stabilizer will give you maximum support as it is the firmest stabilizer available.
  • But there are alternatives... If you know that the back of your towel will be on display, some embroiderers prefer to use a tear-away stabilizer. Bits of your cut-away stabilizers will remain with your final project so if you don’t want this a tear-away stabilizer is a better option.
  • Use a water-soluble topping. It is highly recommended that you use a water-soluble topping. This is to ensure your stitches don’t get lost or sink into your towel.
  • 'Float' your embroidery. Sometimes your towel may be too thick to hoop together with your stabilizer and topping. To remedy this you can ‘float’ your towel above your hoop.
  • Use a spray-on adhesive. If you attempt floating your material, make sure you have a can of spray-on adhesive on hand! This will help all your layers stay in place and it won’t add any distress on your items.
  • Use a design template. This will ensure your placement comes out perfectly. There are templates that come with software and some that come with the embroidery machines.

  • Buy High-Quality Towels. Towels come in a variety of styles and sizes. Not all of them make ideal embroidery blanks. You need a towel that is not too plush but also has a tight nap.
  • Wash and Dry Your Towels Before Embroidering. Most towels don’t shrink much when you wash them, but it is possible, especially if they are made from cotton.
  • Choose Plain Embroidery Designs with Solid Fills. Intricate, delicate embroidery designs do not do well on towels because the surrounding nap falls on the edges.
  • Use a Large Embroidery Needle. Since toweling is thick, you’ll get the best results with a size 90/14 embroidery needle. It is super sharp and great at penetrating thick fabric.
  • Use Medium-Weight, Tear-Away Stabilizer. Most people recommend that you use cut-away stabilizer when embroidering on towels because it provides the best support.
  • Use a Water-Soluble Topper. To prevent embroidery stitches from sinking into the nap of towels, you need to use a water-soluble topper. This is another type of stabilizer that you put on the top of your fabric.
  • Float Your Towel on Your Embroidery Hoop. To float your towel on your hoop, place a piece of stabilizer securely in your hoop and then spray it with a temporary adhesive or basting spray.
  • Doublecheck Your Embrodery Design Placement. As with all machine embroidery projects, you don’t want to rush through the placement step. Precision is important — you want to get it right the first time.
