  • Adjust Drill. Turn down the torque on the drill. This slows down the speed of the drill's rotation and provides a better inner gearing ratio for drilling into hard surfaces.
  • Make Depth Gauge. The purpose of making a drill depth gauge is to provide yourself with a marker so you know how far to drill into the brick. You will want to drill as far as the length of the screw, plus another quarter inch.
  • Mark Brick. With a pencil, place a mark on the brick where you want to drill the hole.
  • Drill Hole in Brick. If the brick is very smooth, the drill bit may travel off of the mark point when you turn on the drill. With a hammer and 16d nail or similar sharp device, tap lightly a couple of times to create a shallow hole on the brick face.
  • Clear Hole in Brick. Every now and then, use the shop vacuum to remove brick dust from the hole. If you have an assistant, the assistant can hold the nozzle of the shop vacuum underneath the hole while you are drilling, with the vacuum running.

HOW TO DRILL INTO BRICK - THIS OLD HOUSE

From thisoldhouse.com
  • Measure and mark where you want to drill. The first step to drilling into brick is to mark the location. You’ll probably want to use a tape measure to find the center of the wall, the proper height, or the correct spacing between objects.
  • Find your desired depth. Install the appropriate drill bit for your needs and tighten it down. For most tasks, you likely won’t have to drill the entire length of the bit.
  • Start drilling. Donning your safety glasses, mask, and earplugs (hammer drills are loud), set your drill to its highest speed and the hammer setting (if so equipped).
  • Vacuum the hole and floor. Most modular bricks aren’t hollow, so the brick dust often sits in the hole. That dust can obstruct an anchor or screw, so you need to remove it before attaching anything to the brick.
  • Hang or attach your item. If you’re hanging something on the wall, now is the time to use the hardware that came with the item, or an anchor or masonry screw kit.
