  • Prep your nails. Whether or not you’re wearing nail polish, any manicure at home starts with a thorough swipe with a cotton ball or cotton pad soaked in nail polish remover.
  • Shape the tips. Now’s the time to smooth your nails into the shape of your choice. If you want to cut them, do that first to get rid of the length.
  • Clean off cuticle residue. Now it’s time to get any cuticle residue off your nail bed. When doing your manicure at home, Minina recommends skipping the soaking step you may be used to in salons, as the amount of scraping done by a home user doesn’t require it.
  • Add a base coat. Base coats work a lot like primer does for your makeup—it smooths out the surface underneath the color and helps your nail polish stay put.
  • Swipe on a coat of polish. The secret to a perfect first layer of polish? Roll—don’t shake—the bottle to mix the polish without creating air bubbles, says Minina.
  • Add a second coat. A second coat will even out any streaks in your first coat, says Minina. The key here is waiting at least two minutes between coats.
  • Apply a top coat. A top coat is a sealant containing hardeners that help “cure” the polish while adding shine and one final layer of toughness for a chip-free job.
  • Allow to dry. This is maybe the most crucial step in getting a great manicure at home. After all, if you get antsy, you’ll end up with nicks and smudges!
  • Add cuticle oil. Cuticle oil should always come last in your at-home manicure routine when the slickness of the oil can no longer mess with how well your polish attaches to your nail.

  • Start with a clean canvas. Before you start, make sure your fingernails and toenails are polish-free using a non-acetone remover (acetone can be very harsh and stripping!).
  • Soak and scrub. Soak your hands for two to three minutes and your feet for five minutes. Now, time to exfoliate! We love Tree Hut’s affordable body scrub, but for an easy at-home fix, just mix one tablespoon of sugar with one tablespoon of baby oil gel and gently scrub away the dead, dry cells.
  • Care for your cuticles. Soften your cuticles by rubbing a bit of oil on them. By now, your cuticles should be nice and soft, so go ahead and push them back with an orangewood stick to get a really nice shape.
  • Don’t skip the base coat. Apply a base coat to smooth any ridges and create an even surface for your color. One thin coat will do. OPI. Natural Nail Base Coat.
  • Polish away. Paint on two thin layers of polish, allowing your color to dry completely between each coat. To do it like the professionals, swipe polish down the center of the nail first, then on each side.
  • Add a top coat. Applying a top coat does more than add shine. It also smooths away any flubs and flaws, which is often a total lifesaver. Just one coat is all you will need.
  • Relax and don’t. touch. anything. Now, just chill and resist the urge to do anything except lay on the couch and watch Real Housewives. You deserve it (and your freshly painted nails do too).

  • Clean your nails with polish remover. To get a great manicure at home, do as the pros do by spending as much time on nail care as you do polishing them.
  • Clip, file, and buff. This is when you're going to want to bust out that manicure set. Clip nails first, if necessary. Then file gently, moving in one direction to get your tips square, round, or somewhere in between.
  • Push back your cuticles. Prep cuticles with cuticle remover—make sure it's not an oil or a balm—to help dissolve dead skin and soften the area.
  • Exfoliate your hands. Exfoliate hands, wrists, and forearms with a scrub that eliminates dead skin cells and replenishes moisture (try this one from SheaMoisture).
  • Moisturize your hands and cuticles. Moisturize now to avoid smudging almost-dry nail polish later. A luxe, light alternative to hand cream that's also ideal for cuticle hydration: Mario Badescu Rose Hips Nourishing Oil, which manicurist Geraldine Holford used for Gigi Hadid's showstopping Met Gala manicure.
  • Apply a base coat. Apply a base coat to hydrate and protect nails and prevent chipping. Then chill for a few. Nail guru Essie Weingarten, founder of Essie, recommends waiting two full minutes between each coat, starting with the base coat.
  • Apply your first coat of color. Now for the fun part: Paint your nails with a coat of your color of choice (some faves, here, if you need ideas), being sure to get the brush all the way down to the cuticle and into the corners of your nail.
  • Apply your second coat of color. After a nice full two minutes (set your iPhone timer if you know you're going to cheat), apply the second coat of nail polish.
  • Finish with a topcoat. A topcoat protects your manicure from chipping and adds shine to nails—don't skip it, or you'll significantly shorten the lifespan of the paint job you just worked so hard on.
  • Clean up rough edges and let your nails dry. Tidy up any mistakes or wobbly edges by wrapping a piece of cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover around the end of your cuticle stick and carefully trace around your nails.
