I found this in the Thanksgiving edition of Family Circle in the 80's and I have been making it ever since--for summer bbq's as well.

DONNA'S COLE SLAW
This is an vinegar based cole slaw. My cousins gave me this recipe. I love this stuff. She makes it for all get togethers. And I will always take home any leftovers.

- Mix cabbage, onion, carrot, cucumber, salt and pepper together.
- Mix vinegar,oil, and sugar in an jar and shake well.
- Pour over slaw.
- Refrigerate overnight.

Steps:
- Combine the cabbage, carrots, red onion, green onions and bell pepper in a large bowl. In another bowl, stir together the mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, lemon juice and sugar. Pour the dressing over the cabbage mixture and toss gently to mix. Season the cole slaw with the celery seed, hot sauce, salt and pepper. Chill for 2 hours before serviing.

NANCY'S COLE SLAW FROM PAULA DEEN

Steps:
- In a medium bowl, combine the onion and sugar and let stand for 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, combine the oil, vinegar, mayonnaise, salt, and celery seed and add to the onion mixture.
- Pour the mixture into a jar with a tight lid.
- Shake the jar to blend the dressing.
- Put the cabbage in a large serving bowl and add the onions, pour on the dressing, and toss well.
- Do not overdress.
