S.O.S. (Creamy Hamburger Gravy) +Video image

S.O.S. also known as Creamy Hamburger Gravy is an old-school meal. This is a classic, simple and tasty meal that is reminiscent of military cooking!

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 pound ground beef
2 cups milk, (2% or higher)
4 Tablespoons salted butter
4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
12 slices bread, (toasted)

Steps:

  • In a medium sauce pan over medium high heat, brown the ground beef. Season with a little salt and pepper. Drain excess grease and set aside.
  • Melt butter in the same sauce pan. Add flour and whisk until butter/flour mixture is bubbly.
  • Add milk, salt, and pepper. Whisk continuously until thick and bubbly.
  • Add cooked ground beef back in and stir.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning as needed (I usually like a bit more pepper). If necessary, add a little more milk until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Serve over toast.

When I was a kid growing up, we didn't have a lot of money. My dad used to make this, served often over sliced white bread or biscuits. It was a cheap and easy way to feed a family of five! Also it was delicious!

4 c whole milk
1-1 1/2 lb hamburger 80/20
1/2 c all purpose flour
2-3 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper

Steps:

  • 1. In a deep skillet, brown hamburger.
  • 2. Draing hamburger, reserving 1/2 cup grease. Set hamburger aside.
  • 3. Add grease back into the pan and heat over medium-high heat.
  • 4. Whisk in flour and stir until just starting to brown.
  • 5. Pour in milk, add salt & pepper. Stir over medium-high heat until bubbly and thickened.
  • 6. Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, toast or biscuits!

1 pound ground beef
1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
1/2 cup milk
1 can (4 ounces) mushroom stems and pieces, drained
1-1/2 teaspoons beef bouillon granules
3 cups hot cooked mashed potatoes

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in the soup, milk, mushrooms and bouillon. Reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 10-15 minutes or until heated through, stirring occassionally. Serve over mashed potatoes.

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 pounds lean ground beef
1/2 onion, finely chopped
5 cups milk
2 tablespoons chicken bouillon granules
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 teaspoon ground sage
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup all-purpose flour

Steps:

  • Crumble the ground beef into a large deep skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir until evenly browned. Drain most of the grease, leaving just enough to coat the pan. Add the onions, and cook for a few more minutes. Pour 4 cups of the milk into the pan, and stir to scrape up any bits of food that could burn on the bottom of the pan. Mix in the bouillon, butter, sage, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Mix the flour into the last cup of milk until smooth. Slowly pour into the skillet, stirring constantly. Simmer for a few minutes to thicken. If the gravy is too thick, thin with a little bit of milk. If it is too thin, simmer longer, or add more flour. Taste and adjust seasonings before serving.
