5 lbs hamburger (browned)
1 cup onion (finely chopped)
4 stalks of celery (finely chopped)
1 bell pepper, chopped
2, 14.5 oz cans of tomato sauce
2, 10 oz cans of tomato soup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
1 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder

Steps:

  • For a juicier, looser sloppy joe sandwich, use four pounds of meat. For a less juicy sandwich, use six pounds of meat.
  • Put all the ingredients into the crock pot, stir to combine fully.
  • Cook on low for 4 hours.
  • Serve on buns.

I made these for a potluck at work and they were a definite hit! One thing I didn't put in the recipe: instead of using 1 bell pepper, I usually use 1/2 cup of tri-pepper mix. It's just red, yellow and green bell peppers, already diced. Publix sells it in their produce section. It's a real time saver!

3 lbs ground chuck
1 large vidalia onion, diced
4 stalks celery, diced
1 large bell pepper, diced
2 garlic cloves, minced
24 ounces tomato sauce
1 cup catsup
3/4 cup mild barbecue sauce
3 tablespoons light brown sugar
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoons white vinegar
1 tablespoon beef bouillon granules
3 teaspoons dry mustard
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon Mrs Dash southwest chipotle seasoning mix
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

Steps:

  • Brown the hamburger with the onions, garlic and peppers until the meat is cooked and the onions are clear.
  • Drain well (I just leave mine in the colander draining while I prepare the sauce).
  • In the crock pot, whisk together all the remaining ingredients.
  • Fold in the hamburger mixture. Stir to coat.
  • Cook on low for 5-6 hours.

2 packages of toasted sandwich buns

Steps:

  • In a large deep skillet, sauté pan , or Dutch oven, brown ground beef with onions, celery, and green pepper; drain off fat. If your crock pot has a saute feature, use that to cook everything together. Drain the fat and proceed with the following steps.
  • Place ground beef mixture in crock pot and stir in chili sauce, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and pepper.
  • Cover and cook on a low setting for 4 to 5 hours, stirring occasionally. Taste and adjust seasonings.
  • Serve on toasted sandwich buns.

1 large green pepper, chopped
2 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) diced tomatoes, undrained

1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons celery salt or celery seed
2 teaspoons onion salt or onion powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
3 bay leaves
16 hamburger buns, split

Steps:

  • In a Dutch oven, cook beef and green pepper over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste and seasonings. Bring to a boil. 1 cup onion, chopped
1 cup green pepper, chopped
1 (28 ounce) can tomato sauce
16 ounces tomato soup, undiluted
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup ketchup
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon mustard
1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder

Steps:

  • Cook beef in large skillet over medium-high heat until no longer pink, stirring to break up meat. Drain fat. Add onion, and green pepper and cook, stirring frequently, 5-10 min or until onion becomes translucent and mixture become fragrant.
