WHY TILE IS CRACKED AND HOW TO AVOID IT - THE SPRUCE

  • Tile Received a Sharp Blow. If the crack is located in one area and extends across only a single tile, the crack was likely caused by a sharp blow to the tile.
  • Tile Cracked Under Heavy Loads. Did the refrigerator's dead weight cause the tile to crack? While not common, this is possible. Most tiles comply with ASTM C648 Breaking Strength standards.
  • Tile Was Installed Over a Control Joint. Control joints in concrete are essentially preplanned cracks. Since it is almost certain that concrete will crack at some point in the future, control joints allow you to place those cracks in a predictable fashion.
  • Tile Was Installed on Improperly Spaced Joists. With tile, the less deflection, the better. Wood is flexible; tile is rigid. So, if you have a floor with flex, you are attempting to mate two dissimilar materials.
  • Tile's Concrete Substrate Has Cracked Over Time. It is not unusual for concrete basement floors, driveways, or patios to have a long crack or two running through them, especially if the concrete is several years old.
  • Concrete Substrate Below the Tile Did Not Cure. Newly poured concrete is full of water. As the concrete cures, the water evaporates and the concrete shrinks.
  • Inferior Tile Was Used. Because the tile is cracked, and the tile is the only visible portion of the installation sandwich of mortar and substrate, most homeowners assume that the tile is at fault.

  • Remove Damaged Tiles and Grout. The cracked and broken tile or tiles will need to be removed from the shower wall before new tiles can be installed, so you will want to use a grout saw or another grout removal tool to carefully cut into the grout around the damaged tile.
  • Inspect the Waterproof Membrane. Once you have removed the tile from the wall, it's necessary to perform a thorough inspection of the material underneath the tile.
  • Apply the Tile Adhesive. If you added a fluid waterproof membrane to the area behind the tile, then make sure to wait for the membrane to fully cure before proceeding.
  • Install Replacement Tiles. The replacement tile should slide in easily, but to make sure that the spacing is correct it's a good idea to use tile spacers.
  • Grout the Joints. Check the tile adhesive information provided by the manufacturer to determine how long you need to wait for the adhesive to set. Typically, this takes just a few minutes before you can begin to apply the grout to the joints surrounding the tile.
  • Apply Waterproof Bathroom Sealant. Any areas inside the shower that could be vulnerable to water damage, like a narrow gap between the tub faucet and the wall, should be sealed with waterproof bathroom sealant.
