I used McIntosh apples for this but Granny Smith will do also, though you might have to bake the crisp slightly longer if using Granny Smith apples. This is the best apple crisp!

1 cup flour
3/4 cup old fashioned oats
3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 pinch salt
1/2 cup butter, cut into small pieces and slightly softened
1 cup chopped walnuts (lightly toasted and cooled)
3 lbs apples (peeled and sliced about 1/3-inch thick)
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup white sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 cup flour
vanilla ice cream or whipped cream

Steps:

  • Set oven to 375 degrees.
  • Butter a 10-inch deep-dish glass pie plate (or use an 11 x 7-inch baking dish).
  • For the topping; in a bowl stir together the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon and pinch salt; add in butter and blend with fingers until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  • Add in the toasted walnuts; set aside while preparing the filling.
  • In a large bowl toss the apple slices with the lemon juice; add in all remaining ingredients except the vanilla ice cream, toss well to combine and transfer to the prepared pie plate or baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the prepared topping evenly over the apple mixture.
  • Bake for about 30-40 minutes or until the topping is browned and the apples are fork-tender.
  • Let the crisp stand for 15 minutes before serving.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

3/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 can (14 ounces) whole-berry cranberry sauce
7 cups thinly sliced peeled tart apples
TOPPING:
1 cup old-fashioned oats
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup cold butter, cubed
Vanilla ice cream, optional

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine sugar and flour; stir in cranberry sauce. Add apples; toss to coat. Transfer to a greased 13x9-in. baking dish. , In a small bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, walnuts and cinnamon; cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over apple mixture. , Bake at 375° for 35-40 minutes or until filling is bubbly and topping is golden brown. Serve warm with ice cream if desired.

1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
3/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, cut into bits and softened
1 cup walnuts, toasted lightly, cooled, and chopped
3 pounds McIntosh apples, peeled and sliced 1/3 inch thick (about 8 cups)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
3 tablespoons granulated sugar, or to taste
whipped cream

Steps:

  • In a bowl stir together well the flour, the oats, the brown sugar, the cinnamon, and the salt. Add the butter, blend the mixture until it resembles coarse meal, and stir in the walnuts. In a large bowl toss the apples with the lemon juice and the granulated sugar and transfer the mixture to a buttered 10-inch (2 quart) pie plate. Crumble the topping evenly over the apple mixture and bake the crisp in the middle of a preheated 375°F. oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the apples are cooked through and the top is golden. Let the crisp stand for 10 minutes and serve it warm with the whipped cream.

1 (16 ounce) can tart red cherries, pitted (packed in water)
1/4 cup white sugar
1 pinch salt
2 tablespoons flour
2 teaspoons orange zest
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
3 cups green apples, peeled, cored and sliced thin
1/4 cup dark brown sugar
1 1/2 cups granola cereal
3/4 cup toasted walnuts, chopped
2 1/2 tablespoons butter, melted
whipped cream (optional) or vanilla ice cream (optional)
ground cinnamon (Garnish)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Drain the canned cherries, reserve 1/2 cup juice.
  • Add the cherries and juice to a large mixing bowl; sprinkle with the white sugar and salt. Toss to coat and let stand for 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a small mixing bowl combine together the flour, orange zest, cinnamon, and nutmeg; add to cherries and toss to mix.
  • Combine the apples and brown sugar with the cherries; toss well.
  • In a small mixing bowl combine together the granola, toasted walnuts, and butter; set aside.
  • Pour the fruit filling into a 2-quart square baking dish (ungreased); sprinkle the granola mixture over the filling.
  • Bake for 30 minutes, or until the apples are tender.
  • Cook's Tip: Cover with foil the last 5 - 10 minutes to prevent over-browning.
  • Serve warm and if desired top with whipped cream or ice cream, and sprinkle with additonal cinnamon.

Steps:
